Days when locals are competing in the Olympics

Olympians are looking to make a splash in Paris with 44 of 592 total athletes having connections to the Palo Alto and Mid-Peninsula area.

Mid-Peninsula residents make up 30% of California’s delegation in the national team.

Notably, Steph Curry of Atherton will be making his Olympic debut for the basketball team while Katie Ledecky, of Stanford University, is looking to add to her collection of gold on her fourth Olympics run.

Lily Zhang, table tennis, is coming to the Olympics a fourth time, and grew up on the Stanford campus according to Team U.S.A.’s website. She is looking to get her first medal. This year Stanford boasts 60 athletes in the games representing 15 nations with 20 different sports and according to their website, this is a new school record.

Nine of the area’s athletes will be playing for the water polo teams and five for the track and field team.

Ledecky swam Friday at 2 a.m. for women’s 400 freestyle and will swim again on Tuesday at 2 a.m. for women’s 1500 freestyle. Swim events go from Saturday to Aug. 4, according to the Olympics website.
