San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, who is battling corruption allegations, arrived at the private door of the San Mateo County Superior Court at the Government Center in Redwood City on Friday morning.
Upstairs, the county’s civil grand jury was meeting to consider whether to recommend her removal from office. If the grand jury decides to issue an “accusation” against her, the case would proceed to a jury trial.
The Post wasn’t able to determine whether she appeared before the grand jury on Friday. Grand jury proceedings are secret.
However, her office is on Bradford Street, so she wasn’t waiting there to go to work.
Meanwhile, the Board of Supervisors is moving ahead in the process of firing her.
The board on Tuesday will meet to consider the recommendation of a hearing officer, who reviewed evidence prepared by the county’s lawyers and Corpus’ response. The hearing officer picked by the supervisors, Probation Office Chief John Keene, met with Corpus and her lawyers on June 11, where he received their written response.
The agenda for Tuesday’s meeting says the supervisors will receive a recommendation from Keene to “remove Sheriff Christina Corpus from office for cause.”
The board will vote on Tuesday whether to accept that recommendation. A four-fifths vote is required to fire her. If two of the five supervisors hold out, she keeps her job.
Corpus can appeal the board’s decision by requesting a hearing before another hearing officer. If Corpus requests a hearing, the board will provide her with the option to select from three hearing officers.
At that hearing, Corpus can decide whether it is open or closed to the public or media. She has said for several months now that she wants the opportunity to make her case — and such a hearing would give her the platform she has sought.
The key documents are all secret — both the county’s “Notice of Intent to Remove” that lays out the case for firing her, and her response.
The county says that the “Notice of Intent to Remove” reflects the results of an investigation by the law firm Keker, Van Nest & Peters LLP. The document is supported by 524 pages of evidence and 42 witness interviews, the county said. It concluded that the sheriff engaged in multiple acts of misconduct that, if true, would support removal from office, the county said.
Retired Judge LaDoris Cordell, who was hired by the supervisors to investigate the case, made more specific allegations in a report about Corpus and her chief-of-staff, Victor Aenlle. Cordell concluded the sheriff was engaged in nepotism, retaliation, intimidation, false arrest and making racial and homophobic slurs. And, on the day the Cordell report came out, Corpus ordered the arrest of the deputies union president on allegations that the District Attorney threw out.
Let’s see. She was supposed to testify before the grand jury on Monday. She actually goes there on Friday. She refuses to respond to the Board of Supervisors when they put Measure A on the ballot in December. She wouldn’t sit down for an interview with Judge Cordell. It looks like she’s trying to dodge tough questions.
Hang the bag. Where’s the problem, she’s obviously a criminal. Why the stupid games of cat and mouse. She’s dirty. throw her in prison for a while also.
When she gets fired, let’s hope the rest of the corruption in San Mateo is handled. I will stay mum on the list. It’s long. How we allow such evil in the world into powerful positions is frightening. We the people must pay attention to who we allow into office.
This is just a lynching by a pro union group wasting valuable taxpayer money, using her enemies testimony (not taken under oath)
Corpus was not appointed for life, millions to be spent for little or nothing (hope this paper is fair to both sides)
Thanks Victor. Next time, use your real name.
She’s obviously guilty. If she gets out at all I hope vigilantes start rising. This is the reason california is so terrible now. I grew up here, it is unrecognizable. Luigi mangione could always make a come back…
The Board and The County Executive are the Judge, Jury and Executioner. Take note they select the person to interview the Sheriff? Not only do they select the person but they pay the person so of course the person will side with them that is what they are paid to do. They do the same thing to any County Employee under investigation the County selects who the Skelly Hearing Officer is and prep’s them with their version but the employee can only share new developments not defend themselves against the allegations that the County investigates, writes up the findings to fit the County’s version so they always control the narrative never reveal the truth just the County’s twisted version. The public is always deceived.
Cordell is a retired african amercian female judge-
INITIAL HR COMPLAINTS- not a court trial
Oppenheimer group is diverse group
Kecker females?
Measure A heargs are under oath in court
Grand Jury under oath in court
You don’t just go to HR and then have sworn under oath for initial allegations
Hearing a lot arguing how a legal process starts and continues. Not hearing about the actual wrong doing kept private at this point. What is the biggest waste of money is the person trying to work the legal system herself with multiple lawyers billing the county $1000 + each an hour possibly more just to try and find a loophole or technicality to ease the burden.
Wrong is wrong no matter who you are, who worked in the position before you, what age you are, what color you are what gender you are. Get a grip.
Noone complained about the county employees when they were on the same side supporting each other publicly . Now that people have seen wrong and sharing their freedom of speech to do something they are somehow corrupt?
This situation is impacting the lives of many . The people defending the sheriff are blindsided by greed and power. Ask yourself this question- what would it take to actually see there is wrong doing and if you will ignore all of it and defend it that is the problem right there.
When does this propaganda side bar end?
The troubling part of this story is how long the county supervisors let her continue in her corrupt ways without taking any action. I wonder how many whistleblower letters they crumpled up and threw in the trash like the one that has been mentioned in previous stories? I wonder why they never were suspicious of her answers — like are you having an affair with the guy who is now running your department? I guess she was protected because she was “woke” but now residents are furious nothing has been done.
She testified all day Friday and was back this morning. Her testimony is under oath. If you know Christina, she can’t talk for a minute without telling a big lie. I wonder how many perjury charges will result from her grand jury appearance? Steve Wagstaffe is no dummy.
It is a Kangaroo Court process for sure, but the fact is she is as corrupt as can be. Good riddance to bad rubbish.
The public was deceived when Corpus led them to believe she was qualified to be Sheriff. Nobody spoke up, nobody stopped her or cared enough to tell her what a bad move she was making. Christina Corpus, being the weak female that she is, allowed Victor Aenlle, the short wanna-be-cop Cuban with his wife’s Torello Family Trust money, to schmooze her over which skyrocketed him into a top dollar position he never earned, deserved nor was qualified for. But like with every other man in her life, money has always been the kryptonite for Christina Corpus.
God Bless your husband John for getting out from under you Christina, although you ruined his law enforcement career by using him to run for sheriff and ultimately cheated on him, your kids, and the citizens of San Mateo County. We painfully watched it happen from the inside. John is a good man who did everything for you Christina, but it was never enough. If you have ANY amount of self-respect left, follow John’s lead and get out! There is still time to save the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office from your destructive actions and reputation. Just maybe you can restructure your family again before the walls completely crumble around you, although it’s probably too late.
There are a lot of corruption in the judicial system in San Mateo County, that County does not like minority. All those corrupt law enforcement, judges, prosecutors, and D.A. should be remove from offices, and sent them to jail and prison. They should not go above the law, they should be punish too. The law applies to anyone, justice is what people wants to see.
Corpus has told SO MANY lies there is no way she will be able to get through this! All she does is LIE! Wags will eat her for lunch! She will perjure herself! She is not smart enough to have resigned with some semblance of dignity when she had the chance! She deserves to be removed from office and charged for the Color of Authority Civil Rights crimes SHE committed!!!
I hope this sociopath will be removed from office shortly. Nothing ever seems to be her fault.
