Car smashes into business

Someone drove through the front glass of Mike’s Camera in downtown Menlo Park this morning and took over $13,000 in cameras and lenses, the store manager said.

The break-in happened at 3:56 a.m., store manager Matt Todd said.

Police officers arrived at 4:01 a.m., but the burglars were “in and out within a minute,” Todd said.
The car was abandoned by the post office on Oak Grove Avenue, about two blocks away from Mike’s Camera at 715 Santa Cruz Ave., Todd said.

The car had been reported stolen in Oakland in January, police officers told Todd.

A building inspector walked by Mike’s Camera this morning and red-tagged the building, preventing people from going inside and forcing the store to close for the day, Todd said.

Crews are working to stabilize the building so the store can get an inspection and reopen tomorrow, Todd said.

Customers will have to use the back entrance.

“We’re going to stay open as much as we can,” Todd said.

    • Someone drove truck into back door in March 2015. Caught and sentenced to prison as reported in Daily Post May 24, 2016. There may have been a more recent vehicle smash robbery. Last weekend I think the merchandise loss was limited by steel grill inside the glass, and by the knowledge that police would arrive very soon.
