Confrontation at Starbucks over ‘MAGA’ hat erupts

Rebecca Parker Mankey, 46, of Palo Alto.

BY ALLISON LEVITSKY
Daily Post Staff Writer

A south Palo Alto activist has been fired from her accounting job at Gryphon Stringed Instruments after chasing a man wearing a Make America Great Again cap out of Starbucks and then posting about the confrontation on Facebook.

Rebecca Parker Mankey, 46, was fired on Tuesday (April 2), the day after she yelled at a man with a bushy gray beard named Victor who regularly visits the Starbucks at 361 California Ave. in Palo Alto wearing a red MAGA hat. Mankey didn’t return the Post’s requests for comment.

“Anybody in Palo Alto know this freak?” Mankey asked in a widely shared Facebook post that included two photos of the man at Starbucks. “He will never forget me and will think seriously about wearing that hat in my town ever again. If you see him in this hat, please confront him.”

Mankey went on to write that she yelled at him, “called the entire Starbucks to order” and yelled at him again about hating Latinos.

“He threatened to call the cops. I left after yelling at him some more,” Mankey wrote. “I went back in and yelled after I had changed my mind and wanted him to call the police because I wanted to know his name, where he lived, his wife’s name and where his kids went to school.”

Mankey then called the man more names, told him to call police and asked someone else at Starbucks to call the police.

“He wouldn’t call the police, so I called him a wimp. He got his stuff together to leave. I followed him to the register while he complained about me,” Mankey wrote. “Then chased him out of Starbucks yelling him to get the f*** out of my town and never come back.”

At one point, the man asked Mankey whether she lived in Palo Alto, she said.

“He wasn’t expecting me to say that I was Palo Alto born and bred. I think he lives in Palo Alto, please please send me a (direct message) if you see him anywhere,” Mankey wrote. “The part that was really heartbreaking to me was that in a full Starbucks, I was the only person yelling at him.”

Mankey said it was the “duty of every white person in America to stand up to this every time they see it.”

Mankey is an affordable housing activist who was appointed to serve on the city’s North Ventura Coordinated Area Plan Working Group. In November 2017, she unsuccessfully sought an appointment to the Planning and Transportation Commission, winning votes from slow-growth council members Tom DuBois, Lydia Kou and Karen Holman. She also ran for a delegate seat with the Democratic State Central Committee in January, but wasn’t elected.

On Tuesday morning, the conservative Twitter account @RightHookUSA posted screenshots of Mankey’s Facebook post to its nearly 12,800 followers.

Later, @RightHookUSA even tagged Palo Alto Unified School District Superintendent Don Austin in a tweet after finding out that Mankey’s husband works for the school district.

“@DonAustin_PAUSD, I left a (voicemail) w/your secretary Victoria regarding the wife of your employee Will Mankey. Parker Mankey is inciting mob-like violence against an elderly man who wore a MAGA hat,” @RightHookUSA tweeted at 11:14 a.m. Tuesday. “She lists your school info on her (Facebook). Do you condone?”

Dozens of other conservatives have weighed in on the confrontation on Twitter and Facebook. @RightHookUSA even started using Mankey’s name as a verb, as in “You’ve been Parker Mankeyd.”

By Tuesday afternoon, Mankey was fired, according to the management at Gryphon Stringed Instruments, also called Gryphon Strings, a company that sells, rents and repairs used and vintage instruments from guitars to mandolins.

“We understand how passionate she is regarding politics. We never could have imagined it would have escalated to this kind of ordeal,” Gryphon Strings store manager Matt Lynch told the Post. “Putting political beliefs aside, you know, we are just not going to tolerate that kind of harassment from any of our employees, no matter what position they hold here.”

Gryphon Strings was inundated with angry phone calls on Tuesday from people who heard about the confrontation, likely via social media.

Some of the calls were from locals, while others came from elsewhere in the country and even Canada. The store also got emails from abroad.

“Every other call was pretty much regarding this issue,” Lynch said. “It was a bit overwhelming.”

Calls from locals were “really quite level-headed” in explaining their disappointment, while out-of-town callers tended to be more obscene and included threats, Lynch said.

The threats were vague: mainly male callers saying they were going to come to the store with a group of people and “teach us how to run our business,” according to Lynch.

This morning, Palo Alto Human Relations Commissioner Steven Lee said in a statement that Mankey is “beloved by many in our community for her progressive activism, myself included.”

But, Lee said, Mankey’s confrontation at Starbucks showed that she had “allowed herself to be pulled down” into the “muck” of political polarization.

“The MAGA hat at its best represents a distorted and inaccurate view of America, its history and its place in the world and, at its worst, is a symbol of hate and everything that is wrong with America today,” Lee wrote. “We resist intolerance. But we do not resist people. We must resist sinking down to their level. We must hold out our hand and help pull them out of the muck.”

A regular Starbucks customer who declined to give his name said he had seen the man in the MAGA hat at Starbucks and Izzy’s Brooklyn Bagels. He usually sits with a newspaper and talks with a female companion about national politics “loudly enough so people can hear.”

Like most other customers, he said he tries to leave the MAGA man alone because he seems to be “just trying to antagonize people” with his statements about immigration and other topics that the customer described as “typical Fox News.”

The man said he didn’t see Mankey confront the man on Monday. He’s only seen one person, another woman, ever confront him in a “20-second” encounter.

A Starbucks barista today (April 3) declined to leave a message for the store manager, explaining that he didn’t want to comment.

  1. The woman who assaulted the man in the MAGA was way out of line and seriously out of control. It’s scary that people like her are out there. Gryphon has always been a great company that Palo Alto should be proud of. Firing her was exactly the right thing to do. Thank you Gryphon!
The Human Rights guy, Lee, only demonstrates he should look for work elsewhere. MAGA is just a slogan, people who wear it aren’t deviants who need to be assaulted. They are mostly people that support the idea of improving America – this myth that they are haters and racists is so unjust. It’s usually given voice by people who hate Republicans and people who label people by their skin color. Lee should really not be drawing a city paycheck.

        • It IS Assault, Wesh, LEARN THE LAW! Assault is any action that causes the other person to fear bodily harm. It can be a slap, a punch or a shove, but it can also be a verbal threat of violence, aggressive posturing (a raised fist, jabbing a finger) or yelling angrily in someone’s face.

          • Where exactly does Wesh mention anything other than “yelling”?…
Maybe, YOU need to “bone up” on the law, yourself!…

Yelling, in of itself, is NOT an assault!… Ever been to a sporting event?… How many times do you see morons yelling at the officials for making a call that the spectator/fan doesn’t agree with!?!?…
Are all those demeaning, derogatory comments assaults???…
            According to you,… they are!

            • If you yell at someone, that you will kill them, let’s say as an example, that’s verbal assault.stop being blinded by ridiculousness, nobody should treat anybody like that, for any reason

            • Assault is basically a swing and a miss. Trying to physically assault someone but you missed.

PC 415 is applicable to what Mankey was doing.

            • You are kind of incorrect there, the attitude and presentation of the ordeal and harassment as well as berating an elderly person. How she went about it was verbal assault and borderline harassment. No show boating. She was wanting people to rise up and yell at this man, this was going to potentially cause issues at the store and elderly mans well being. People forget this. Every single one of us is right to our beliefs. We are not entitled to scream in someone’s face attempt inviting a harassment and so on. Long story short what she did was infact illegal.

            • And it turned out that the boys did not begin the taunting at all, they were being taunted by a another group, then the Native elder approached them.

          • You might want to take a look at the video recordings of the event in question. At no time did the students ‘surround’ the Native American man. Quite to the contrary, he was the one who deliberately marched to them and proceeded to loudly drum while staring them in the face from about 1-2 feet away.

          • actually that is not the law, assault involves a credible threat of violence, it is a battery or an attempt at the same. But her conduct was way out of line constituting disorderly conduct and also forming the basis for a civil harassment restraining order.

        • Actually, YOU need to read a bit more closely!…
Wesh simply stated that “yelling” at someone is NOT an assault and/or illegal,… which it isn’t!…
YOU took it upon yourself to ASSUME that Wesh was implying that “yelling” and “disorderly conduct” are one of the same,… which any person with more than 2 brain cells working in conjunction would know that those two terms are NOT one of the same!

          • Actually King, yelling is a form of disturbance when the content and following actions create an unsafe condition. Provocation and inciting are also reasons for arrest. Depends on the arresting officer. If he feels the yeller is causing any of the above mentioned actions, their arrested. Please do the homework regarding legal blather.

      • Actually, Wesh, do your research.
        Yelling at people IS Assault.
If you then escalate that verbal confrontation to physical contact the charge is escalated to “Assault & Battery”.

        • Cite the penal code then Robert Kerr…Yelling is not assault. Grabbing someones arm is assault, and then if you hit them it is battery.

          • “Grabbing someones arm is assault(sic),”

Incorrect. Reaching as if to grab an arm constitutes assault. Grabbing an arm constitutes battery.

I want to sit on the jury charged with judging a hump like you.

            • Find a single prosecutor, or even a cop, that would attempt to arrest or make this kind of charge stick. Hint: You can’t. Yelling at someone, unless it is yelling out your intent to harm them, has never resulted in an arrest (outside of maybe public intoxication yelling).

          • Grabbing, touching etc is battery. Assault is the implied attempt to. Educate yourself moron. Every state has a criminal code on line for free viewing. Try it sometime and avoid opening our mouth and appearing stupid.

          • @some guy: California Penal Code 240. Look it up.

Grabbing someone’s arm is battery. Punching them is battery.

In general, assault is the threat of offensive touching, while actual offensive touching is battery. If you act in such a fashion that another person could reasonably fear that you might commit battery against them, it is assault. Admittedly, it is tougher to prove if the person doesn’t actively take a swing or throw something at you, but aggressive posturing can qualify in the right overall circumstances.

          • I looked up the definition of assault as defined by the Legal Information Institute. “The definition of assault varies by jurisdiction, but is generally defined as intentionally putting another person in reasonable apprehension of an imminent harmful or offensive contact. Physical injury is not required.”

          • Some guy says: you’re wrong as a retired police officer yelling or intimidation of a person is assault. The unauthorized touching of one person by another is battery. It doesn’t have to be a hit. Stop trying to practice law when you don’t know it.

          • CA Penal code 240: Assault is an unlawful attempt, coupled with the present ability, to commit a violent injury upon the person of another.

CA Penal Code 242: Battery is any willful and unlawful use of force or violence upon the person of another.

Courts have ruled that yelling at someone can constitute assault. And making unwanted physical contact with someone is ALWAYS battery, not assault.

      • It most definitely is assault if the person feels threatened. That fact I learned in my CCW class from the police officer instructor.

      • Um, yes it can be, it depends on what’s said genius. Assault is a verbal attack and battery is a physical attack. If she threatened the man, etc., that can be considered assault among other charges.

      • Wearing a hat that promotes fixing our wounded country isn’t illegal, either. Only one of those actions cost someone their job.

      • It’s called verbal assault for which he could file a complaint as a threat or endangering him and fearing for his safety by her behavior. She is despicable

      • In Florida as in many other states, simple assault (also referred to as misdemeanor assault) is an intentional and unlawful threat made by one person towards another in order to create a reasonable fear that violence or harm is about to occur. So Yelling at someone definitely can be considered assault in many places.

      • Verbal assault and screaming at people in their face and threatening to doxx them, IS HATE SPEECH. The true HATERS living in MUCK of their hate-filled existence, and calling fellow Americans who desire their country to be great again, are nothing but hypocrite projectionist true NAZI HATERS stuck in the muck.

      • Try it another way. Let’s say it’s a Trump supporter on a college campus screaming and threatening someone wearing an Obama t-shirt? What do you think would happen? Here’s an idea. Leave people the hell alone.

        • In your scenario, the Trump supporter probably would have been shot and killed based on their irrational and threatening behavior. And the left would have no problem with it.

Such a ridiculous political climate we live in these days – and yes, the media is the biggest problem because so many people are incapable of thinking for themselves and the media exploits ignorant emotion.

        • No. “Hate speech” is NOT illegal. See National Socialist Party of America v. Skokie, 432 US 43 (1977); Brandenburg v. Ohio, 395 US 444 (1969). Also, “inciting violence” is not the standard. The standard is “imminent lawless action.” In other words, if it’s not advocating for something illegal, is realistic, and is likely to be carried out right now, it’s covered by free speech. A call to eject all black people from the U.S. is free speech; a call to burn THAT home to the ground right now because THAT black family lives there is not. See Brandenburg again.

        • There is no such thing as hate speech by legal definition. There is an illegal call to action, like yelling fire in a theater, there is a threat of violence as well. Other than that, you could be charged with inciting a riot, but there is no legal definition as a crime for hate speech.

        • What is more disturbing is a 46 year old woman dressing up as a 16 year old punk rock band member thinks she can tell people how to live their lives.

          • This is a valid psychiatric observation. The woman’s state of mind (unstable), expressed in her physical demeanor, may explain her proclivity to verbally (physically—if someone else joined her attack?) assault those whose speech she perceives to be erroneous.
Merely the fact that she’s, apparently, incapable of any self questioning, that should lead to some hesitation, before taking any action, is a sign of instability—she is displaying a serious proclivity toward violent righteous authoritarianism
My guess is that she ought never be allowed near a firearm—maybe, not even near a sharp, or pointy,, object that can be used as a weapon.
            .

      • Hey Wesh, getting in someones face and yelling ,name calling etc etc ,screaming at people is assault. Verbal assault is real. I would have to punch anyone who starts screaming at me because of a mis guided since of superiority. The racist, bigoted, and all the other BS names attached to MAGA hat wearers is just that BULLSHYTE

      • So Wesh you accept her actions? typical Far left. What she did was a form of prejudice, I thought it hilarious to find out he was Jewish. Lord in my younger days she would have been considered a freak and outcast with that haircut and look. Times change, glad she was at least fired. People need to realize that their employers are not going to let themselves be associated with divisive actions like this.

      • Actually it is numb nutz, battery is the act of actually making contact. It’s one thing to yell at someone “hey, get off my lawn” quite another to verbally assault, berate, another and create a situation where that individual feels threatened. Big bad liberal activist that she is she’d never try it on someone her own age. No, she does what liberals do, assaults the elderly and perhaps preteens. She’d never try it on someone, say, like myself who’d break her nose in so places she wouldn’t know whether to schit or go blind.

      • Post your address so we can go to your house and yell and scream at your family. Lets see if you change your tune when the shoe’s on the other foot

      • Yes it is numbnutz. Battery is the act of actually making physical contact. There’s a difference between yelling at someone “hey, get off my lawn” and doing what she did – yell, verbally berate and harass. Typical lib wack job she did what deranged libtards do – attacks an elderly person, someone she perceived could not fight back. She wouldn’t ever try that on someone, say, like myself who’d break her face in so places she wouldn’t know whether to schit or go blind. Hit a woman? No never, not ever. But she’s not a woman, she’s an it, an ugly it.

        • Robert — am not sure why you resort to name-calling, insults, and physical threat to make your point. Isn’t that adding to an already toxic environment? What she did was abhorrent and completely inexcusable. It doesn’t matter our political leanings — we can all agree on that. No need to add to the muck.

      • It is illegal as it constitutes a breach of the peace and/or disorderly conduct. Go out and try yelling and screaming at a total stranger until the police arrive. Let me know what happens. Bail would be about $40…

      • It is illegal as it constitutes a breach of the peace and/or disorderly conduct. Go out and try yelling and screaming at a total stranger until the police arrive. Let me know what happens. Bail would be about $40…

      • It’s disgusting. Would you want someone in your face berating you ? Or your elderly parents ? What happened to respect and self respect ? I do not have to agree with you but I can respect us having different opinions! She wants this man harassed along with his family!

      • ok Wesh, come by my place so I can threaten you with bodily harm in the manner that Mankey did and lets see if that’s illegal.

      • Wesh…You must be publicly education…so expect to spend some of your future in jail if you think it was not assault.

      • In California it is a violation of PC 415 to verbally assault them, and if the verbal assault includes threatening statements, it is a violation of PC 422. Touching them, in any way, during a confrontation is a violation of PC 242 (battery) and attempting to strike them in any way is a violation of PC 240 (assault).

      • What’s your point. Not being illegal doesn’t make it OK friend…Then again that’s manners. They seem to be a thing of the past..

      • Just reverse the case and a White man was yelling at a woman wearing a Hope & Change button. Liberal left has lost it as they call Trump a fascist yet they want to regulate free speech.
PS Tell the woman it is not “her” town

      • No, but she did harass him, and that is a crime. Was also preparing to stalk him and his family. Yeah, not so sane. And calling him a freak? Well, I’m a proponent of live and let live, but has she looked in the mirror lately? Doh!

        • It’EXACTLY! As they say, when you live in a glass house you shouldn’t throw stones. At 46, one would think she would have the maturity and experience to handle a situation like this much better. Yes, at 46 she should be responsible for the consequences of her actions. Getting fired for her hostile actions over someone wearing a hat! yes, her employers quickly figured she was a potential liability that they could not afford. This whole scenario paints a very unflattering picture of the “left”, of Palo Alto and California as a whole.
Her firing should give pause to anyone on the left or the right to think about the consequences of their actions before they act out in public.

She threatened to dox this man yet she was doxed in the end and has now lost her job, her volunteer position and has had to shut down her social media account(s). Was it worth it? Talk about the all-time greatest backfire. Oh the irony of it all.

      • In a normal healthy society, adults do not verbally attack people whom they do not know but presume to have a beef with in public. Sadly, this is a classic case of the aggressor not being able to perceive how her outburst was perceived. It did not make her a hero, but showed her to be nothing but a self appointed, thought policing bully. It certainly was not the Trump supporter that made a fool of themselves.

      • What is more disturbing is a 46 year old woman dressing up as a 16 year old punk rock band member thinks she can tell people how to live their lives.

      • Actually, it is assault. I’m an LEO, and I’ve charged people for yelling – as an assault, albeit a misdemeanor. A little knowledge before commenting will only help you.

      • Ah yeah, it is. Putting your hands on someone is ‘battery’. Screaming in someone’s face is absolutely assault. If this was the other way around, someone screaming at a person wearing an Obama Hope T-shirt, calling them names, trying to rally others to join in, it would be considered a hate crime.

      • Assault
        Definition

The definition of assault varies by jurisdiction, but is generally defined as intentionally putting another person in reasonable apprehension of an imminent harmful or offensive contact. Physical injury is not required.

      • it’s not illegal, but if it continues, she could be charged with harassment in most state.. In California, I’m sure she would never be charged, considering who she was yelling at.

      • Actually, if you invade someone’s personal space in an aggressive manor, it is assault. If you then make physical contact, it becomes Battery. Thus the terms “Assault & Battery”.

      • “This morning, Palo Alto Human Relations Commissioner Steven Lee said in a statement that Mankey is “beloved by many in our community for her progressive activism, myself included.”

It seems Mr. Lee is failing to grasp that in large part Palo Alto is doing a good job of creating the muck and the very people who have the distorted view of America, its history and its place in the world” and is itself a place that is full of hate and everything that is wrong with America today. I doubt if there is much resistance to intolerance, let alone not sinking down to the level of ‘muck’ Mr. Lee is opining about.

      • It would be worth any amount of repercussions to have been there and slammed this mentally deranged piece of human excrement face into the pavement. If these liberal wack jobs want confrontation there are many out there that happily oblige them. Keep it up and you will find us and maybe we will find you. The world is made worse by people like Rebecca Parker Mankey.

        • I am liberal. This woman is a nut job as are the idiots who heckled Pete Buttigieg recently. Why is it that you need to Use crude language? Is that the new normal?

      • Yeah, actually accosting someone in a public place IS illegal. Just as stalking is illegal. And threatening someone, as in saying that she meant to harass him and his children is CERTAINLY illegal. Go try it. However, the idea that she called an innocent elderly Jewish man who did nothing to her a Nazi makes her human garbage. Its so funny that Democrats believe their own lies that trump or Trump supporters are racist, even while Dem gov Northam hasa picture of himself in BLACKFACE, while Trump is working hard to provide jobs a nd safety to the black community.

      • Have you never heard of verbal assault. I’ve known people arrested for verbal assault. This lady is a disrespectful, inconsiderate, intolerant, ignorant moron who has some serious psychological issues. She needs some serious mental therapy!!!

      • The line was crossed when she posted his picture said he hated brown people, and to confront him. That is illegal, you can question me , but I do know the law and am quite sure it’s the same in California as it is where I retired from.

      • Doesn’t matter. The “woman” or whatever it was it clearly an uneducated c0nt. You can be fired for acting like an uneducated c0nt. And she was… sweet justice for the liberal loonies

        • Declan, agree she was completely out f line but why is it necessary to use such crude language? Disgrace to the Irish.

      • Yelling can be assault…’yelling that puts someone in reasonable fear of harm is assault’.
..you are thinking of battery, actually unlawfully touching another person

      • Did you read the entire article she wrote you idiot? She was inciting violence against this man. What an ugly freak she is. Haha she lost her job

      • Seriously??? She created a scene in place of business, harassing customers by screaming at them, this is NOT normal or appropriate behavior. The woman needs a shrink just as much as Trump does.

      • She was inciting people to harass him in the coffee shop and later on Facebook by posting a picture of him … Like it or not, he shares the same liberties of expression and freedom of speech as she does, but you cannot infringe on other people and try to cram it down their throats. Everyone can disagree with anything, but spewing hate muddles your message, makes you irrelevant, and proves counter-productive; plus it’s just plain tacky. She wanted attention, and got it in a big way, lol. Be careful what you wish for…

    • Eric, I can’t agree more with what you have stated concerning what Lee and others presume about anyone who is Republican and supports our President and America! I am not in the Muck, I am not a Racist etc., etc.,! Just look at what every Media outlet was saying over the Covington Students and the hats they were wearing! Then, to imply that we MAGA supporters are being brainwashed by Fox News as if they are the Only Truth Tellers And they have more brains than we have! GET REAl, Lee! Your remarks show that you yourself are exactly What you Portray MAGA Supporters to be! Get UP out of the MUCK yourself! This continues to be the leftist belief because we don’t align our thinking to match theirs! MAGA! Trump 2020

    • It’s absolutely disgusting that this mentality is perpetuated by public officials like Lee. She is an unhinged lunatic. There is zero justification for this. Harassing a Jewish old man, like a typical a**hole liberal.

      • My God, people, she’s obviously a total, angry with the world lunatic. I’m sure that her appearance just blends right into her “Give the world the finger” attitude. She may have gone off her meds!

    • completely agree with everything you said. people of color have the lowest unemployment rate in history and yet Trump and the MAGA hat are still considered racist by some of the left wackos. All you have to do is look at a picture of this lady and see who the crazy one is. And this Lee guy is an absolute sham who should not be getting a paycheck.

      • There is no such thing as “people of color”. Everyone has a color, whether you like “their kind” or not. Using that phrase promotes racism.

        • That’s strange because African Americans and Hispanics call themselves “people of color”. So how do you think that promotes racism when they use that term? Sounds pretty hypocritical to me. Also, I don’t know if you are aware of the new trend at universities to have housing that is only for POC and even graduations only for POC. There was a political meeting last week for mayoral candidates in Savannah and on the door it said “Black Press Only”. So it seems that the dream of integration is going back to self segregation. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/3305136002

          • Using the term “People of color” defines a class of people that feel they need an excuse for why they are not succeeding. It’s a crutch.

Of course I seem real discrimination and want to end it so that every individual is treated according to their merits, not their skin color (or gender!), but leaning on the “people of color” crutch does not serve them well. What serves them well is to stop focusing on the color of their skin and instead focus on integrating and being good at what they do. Yes, it’s tougher for some ethnicities and women, but the way forward is to work harder and prove value. Demanding special treatment will NEVER get you equality.

Ever notice the enormous number of Indians migrating to the US and being extremely successful? They are running companies and dominating in many cases. They also have “brown skin,” but you don’t see them whining and claiming to be mistreated as “People of color.”

    • She threatened a man expressing himself within the purview of his 1st amendment rights. She then called on others to do the same, using the infinite platform of social media. She then made not-so-vailed threats against his home and anyone (including children) that may be there. She spewed insane intolerance, hatred, animus…all because someone disagreed with her communist world-view. Yet Palo Alto Human Relations Commissioner Steven Lee says SHE is “beloved for her activism”, while Victor is viewed as “antagonistic”. Gotcha.

      • Yep! Welcome to Palo Alto, Welcome to Silicon Valley, Welcome to California and finally, welcome to the new Democratic party!

    • Thank you…yes, we just want a better country..msm has turned the MAGA hat into something it most definitely does not represent

      • She was aggressive and threatening. Seems like all the lefties are this way. It’s very scary to think they have such hate for people who don’t agree with their ideas. I’m proud to be Republican. My whole family is.

    • I agree with you Eric. Steven Lee as Human Relations Commission is in the WRONG job. Taking up for this woman like he did is irresponsible and deplorable !!!!

    • I am happy she has been let go. With no job it’s gonna be hard to live in Palo Alto. It looks like one of them will be leaving town Hahahahaha

    • BS! This was an attack, because of the man’s age and his hat. She, is much younger. When You get old you will see the limits we have. And let me tell you mouth, old age is coming to YOU too!!

    • If anyone would like to drop Ms Rebecca Parker Mankey a line or two, her address is 438 Ventura Ave,#__ Palo Alto, CA 94306

    • People like this think they know Trump supporters. They do not look at the term MAGA as a negative at all, it is a slogan that they wish for the country, they want it to ve great and they want greatness, a comfortable life with jobs and security for ALL Americans no matter who they are. They say the slogan with a handshake and a smile or a hug. The left has decided that it is something else, just because they have decided it is negative doesn’t mean they are right. They are not. The left has a major issue with not admitting faults and doubling down on their wrongs. Until they get some self reflection and change this, they will continue to push more and more Americans away. EVERY American matters. They can have this white guilt and stew in it, it is doing nothing that is productive for them, it is just creating more division. Minorities are strong enough that they don’t need white people to champion them, if only she realized many of them are actually offended by their views of them. They think they are weak and that they are victims who need a white person being their champion. They do not.

    • “This morning, Palo Alto Human Relations Commissioner Steven Lee said in a statement that Mankey is “beloved by many in our community for her progressive activism, myself included.”

    • This woman is a menace to society and the cops should have filed charges based on the witnesses in the Starbucks even if he didnt. That is ATROCIOUS behavior. I dont care what your politics are you are NOT allowed to treat people that way. Let me tell you libtards something, if i see you do that to an elderly person, i’ll step between you and give you a chance to step up and back it up. Thats california, and youre nothing but liberal animals there. Bring that back east a bit until you hit the atlantic where you might be safe again.

    • This women is a pathetic example of a human. She has a big mouth, she’s lucky the gentleman waring the hat was a gentleman. If she keeps spewing her garbage towards strangers eventually she is going to cross paths with the wrong (could argue the right) person and the bully will get what bully’s get. She’s a punk with a big mouth. Yuk..

    • Eric, you are spot on. It’s funny that the only people being intolerant are the extreme leftists. They spew out their hatred and force feed everyone around them, tolerance. Yet they have none.

  2. Come on Palo Alto Democrats, whatever happened to the idea of “live and let live”? This guy wasn’t bothering anyone, he was simply WEARING something she found to be offensive. Leave him alone and mind your own business!

    • Agree! I think her hairstyle is offensive yet she is free to look as stupid as she wants and I won’t accost her….

  3. What right does this woman have to hassle this guy? What a black eye for Palo Alto! Our community is so “inclusive” except for people we disagree with!!! This is disgusting.

    • Actually, what is disgusting is that Mankey was sought and received appointments and attempted to get a seat in Democrat Steering Committee.

  4. Thank you, @ALLISON LEVITSKY, for posting pictures of Ms. Mankey. The whole event suddenly became clear with those images. To read that Ms. Mankey called *anyone* “a freak” is hilarious when put in context with a visual of her. I get it when young people, meaning teens and very early twenties, sport ridiculous haircuts/appearances as they seek to shock and make themselves stand out. But at 46, it’s just plain dysfunctional and suggests mental health issues (not to mention immaturity).

I truly hope that the police keep a watch on this woman – she is not dealing with a full deck.

    • I am a conservative and support Trump and don’t in any way condone the actions of Ms. Mankey. She promotes the same hate she is accusing others of having. However, your comments about someone’s choice of appearance are also very hateful in the same way a racist puts someone down for the way they look. Both sides really need to grow up here and stop perpetuating the hate.

      • There is no connection between racism and making fun of an incredibly ugly CHOICE of hairdo. The woman is unhinged – obvious in her behavior and her choice of how she presents herself.

  5. I actually happened to see the whole thing and even made a video. As a regular, I see the guy there all the time. This time he was just sitting and reading hes new paper when she showed up and started hysterically yelling. While am not Trump supporter I felt this really was harassment.

  6. Civil discourse Rebecca, civil discourse. Don’t embarrass us any more with your hatred. It diminishes quality of life and emboldens those who hate. Stop screeching and talk to the man in the hat. Buy him a coffee, ask him a question and listen. Don’t talk. Just listen. Find out what makes you hate him so much. What makes him who he is. You will learn a lot by keeping quiet.

    • Why even engage him at all? Just mind your own business, leave the man alone to enjoy his coffee, and go about your day. I still see people wearing Obama clothing all the time when I’m out. I think that’s abhorrent based on the policies of those years. At the same time, I couldn’t care less what they choose to wear and leave them be or engage in non political conversation if that’s the position I’m in.

    • AB IS SOOOO RIGHT ON. REASON ABLE BEHAVIOR PEOPLE. BADLY DONE MISS REBECCA ,BADLY DONE ( MY FAVORITE QUOTE FROM JANE AUSTIN’S EMMA )

  7. Commenting as a person out of state, do you all understand why most people think Cali has become unhinged? I won’t vacation or spend MY hard earned money at any business that is run out of the state and will only visit when I have to, due to work. The perception is that this place has become and crap hole (pun intended). This type of behavior is only hurting the other 90% of people who live in the state, who are good decent people. If I have offended, sorry but not sorry.

    • It’s pretty easy, and pretty telling, for someone to cherry pick one extremist and try and use them as emblematic of the entire state’s personality. Why didn’t you, for example, pick Elan Musk as the representative of CA? Or Mark Zuckerberg? Or Serena Williams? Or thousands of other competent leaders who are outstanding in their field?

How about you name your state, and I can choose one of the inevitable loser nut jobs that you also have as a citizen?

You made your choice because you have an agenda Lisa. But thanks for coming here to earn your money. Since were the 5th biggest economy in the world and keeping the rest of the US in black ink, its one of the many things we in CA are proud of. Glad your enjoying reaping our benefits.

      • Didn’t I say that 90% of the people are good and decent, or are you conveniently leaving out that part? And what is it telling me? You prove my point.

      • California is the next Venezuela , they were one of the top 10 biggest economy’s in the world as well.
So what’s your point again ?

      • Oh Chris…
There are plenty more “extremists” where she comes from, Sacramento, the state capital, is full of them, all “elected” by fellow extremists.
The TDS is strong with this one!

      • California is rank around 10-15th economy per capita in the nation. California accounts for 1/3 of federal welfare. We can all pull out stats.

      • I’m a lifelong California resident, and I’m really tired of hearing all this crap about how California is keeping the rest of the country afloat – that’s a total lie. Do you realize that we have the highest number of welfare recipients in the U.S.? Hell, we’re barely keeping ourselves afloat, much less anywhere else. The liberal policies of this state have driven many businesses and residents to relocate elsewhere. In a few more years, we won’t be the 5th biggest economy in the world, just the biggest depository of entitled losers. If California broke off and had to go it alone, you’d quickly realize how full of s**t you are…

      • Thank you, some guy!…
        Those are my sentiments, exactly!…
AND, that was the explanation that I got from a D.A. friend of mine!

But, unfortunately, some people like to pull their understanding/interpretation of the law out of their… !

    • Don’t come to California Than,( Notice I didn’t cal the state Cali )we really don’t need you here. Stay in the backwoods state that your from and judge the people there.

  8. Hard to believe that a woman who misappropriated and butchered a Native American hairstyle should complain about anyone’s headgear. However, as she had shown herself to be an intolerant fascist with no appreciation for America and its constitution, perhaps it is better for her to move to Cuba or Venezuela where she might enjoy life with like-minded oppressors.

  9. Some people are so wrapped up in politics and polarized that they get right up to the edge of violence; some even cross that line. No matter what you believe, you are not allowed to assault another person. Whatever happen to the concept that the cure for speech you disagree with is more speech?

  10. TDS is real and is responsible for more descent into mental illness than other malady. Too bad Agnews is closed as it would be filled to capacity with these lunatics.

    • Additionally, I would like to commend Gryphon for hiring the mentally challenged, and then following through and sending her back to her padded safe space when it became obvious she was not compatible with dealing in evolved human interaction.

    • I grew up in this beautiful state and though I love the area and everything it has to offer, I hate the idiots living here. Crime is through the roof, you can’t walk down the street in SF without dodging human feces and being accosted by vagrants and the roads anywhere in third world countries are better than they are here in California. Liberalism has destroyed this state.

      • I got a view of what you mention here by watching a documentary on Seattle entitled: “Seattle is dying” on YouTube.
Sounds a lot like what you’re experiencing in San Francisco!
Look it up; it’s heart breaking and all because of liberalism! The police have their hands tied….

  11. Additionally, I would like to commend Gryphon for hiring the mentally challenged, and then following through and sending her back to her padded safe space when it became obvious she was not compatible with dealing in evolved human interaction.

  12. I can imagine that her employer was happy to finally be rid of her and hadn’t previously fired her for fear of retaliation with California’s screwed up “inclusion and diversity” laws.

Not that I’d ever do business in Palo Alto, but if I’m ever down there I might stop in at Gryphon and thank them for doing the right thing.

Whack-jobs like this woman have no place in civil society.

    • California is an at-will employment state. Means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time for any reason.

      • ….and any woman can make false sexual harassment, sexual discrimination, RAPE accusations and destroy you or your business using “trial-by-Internet”. You have to be careful with these freaks.

  13. Ms. Mankey and her cohorts are trying to ruin California w SB 50, so they can get a condo building built next door to your single family home in Palo Alto and in one of its affordable housing units, become your neighbor.

  14. “We must resist sinking down to their level??” It’s conservatives who must resist sinking down to the average, hate-filled liberal’s level! This jackass, Steven Lee calls himself a human relations commissioner?

  15. “We must resist sinking down to their level??” It’s conservatives who must resist sinking down to the average, hate-filled liberal’s level! This jackass, Steven Lee calls himself a human relations commissioner?

  16. We have her address. I think she needs an attitude adjustment. Liberals are all unhinged, hysterical, intolerant, violent, emotionally unstable. Such hypocrites. No freedom of speech or expression or even belief unless it is identical to her/his own. This man/woman, who can tell needs to ‘disappear’.

  17. Mentally ill. And the reactions to her unhinged behavior will – in her mind – justify it – because the nazis are coming.

The media and democrats should be held to account for radicalizing weak-willed liberals and feminists.

  18. I see this guy all the time. His wife looks super embarrassed and walks a few steps behind him. The first time he walked by I actually clicked a photo and sent it to my wife, “there some dude with a MAGA hat.” This is way out of the normal and he has to be wearing that just to troll people. He probably isn’t even a Trumpster and just get a kick out of the reaction.

    • Looks to me like you were the one trolling people in MAGA hats. Did you take a photo of anyone else in a hat that day?

      • Somebody could walk by in that hat Chevy Chase wore in Spies Like Us and I wouldn’t give it a second glance… this is Palo Alto (in case you don’t recall that Oscar https://youtu.be/e0xPCas2tHQ). A MAGA hat is like a beacon of wtf. I’m not really into politics but I assure you, that is the only MAGA hat within thirty miles–closeted or not. He must have got that mail order.

        • There are a fair number of people in the area who support Trump and would wear a MAGA hat but they are afraid to do so because of people like you, Overblown and Mankey.

  19. Ms Mankey is manky…
She is a mentally ill democrat, obviously suffering from TDS in the aftermath of the Mueller report…
Trump should make psychological or psychiatric care available gratis for these poor, poor, people! Otherwise, they will hurt someone.
She is, however, an evil, hateful woman. Whether her mental illness is causing it is inconsequential for our purposes today.

  20. The MAGA hat is not a symbol of hate. It is a symbol of love. Love for our country. Love for our President. And even love the immigrants who come to our country legally wanting to be Americans. The fact thay we don’t want criminal aliens crossing our borders does not make us haters.

  21. If it wasn’t embarrassing enough to live in a town full of hipsters, techies, lawyers and venture capitalists but it worse to live in a town in which a “nut case” like Rebecca Parker Mankey resides.

  22. Not shocked that Commissioner Lee said “we must resist hate and getting down to their level” – the only people getting down to this insane, hateful level is YOUR SIDE, Lee, it’s obvious how much you and your ilk hate the USA. The left is creating these lunatics, not MAGA hat wearing old men. She and you are shameful and unhinged!

  23. Why is it that only “conservative groups” are taking a stand action this abhorrent behavior. I did not vote for Trump but anyone who lives in this country has a right to wear a MAGA hat and no I don’t assume they are racist simply by wearing that hat.
There is literally no decency left in this country. That elderly Jewish man has probably faced more discrimination in his lifetime than that women who harassed or anyone she knows. She should have been arrested for threatening him. It’s a damn shame that she’s not held accountable by all groups of people, not just conservatives.

  24. My God, people, she’s obviously a total, angry with the world lunatic. I’m sure that her appearance just blends right into her “Give the world the finger” attitude. She may have gone off her meds!

  25. What a world it would be if everyone that’s “offended” by someone else attacked them, made a big ol’ scene, tried to “create a crowd”. I personally think people littered with tattoos are dumb and don’t think much of those that perforate their face with all manner of silly “hardware”, but they are free to live as they choose…. who am I to try and humiliate them? That loudmouthed ‘edgy” woman probably doesn’t realize……. she can be “doxxed” just as easily. In less that 2 minutes – I have her address. lucky for her I’m above her childish, hateful behavior.

  26. TDS is simple bigotry. This unfortunate example, mrs mankey, stereotyped a Trump supporter, a patriot, as racist, as white supremacist. Where was she incrementally brainwashed? Could it be CNN or NPR or MSNBS? Yes. As an example of deliberate media lies and distortion, aka mainstream misleadia, here is the famous one from CNN, not apologized for (to date): https://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2019/03/21/trump_didnt_call_neo-nazis_fine_people_heres_proof_139815.html and here is a typical cnn panel tag team shutting down the truth teller (see 5min 25sec mark) http://vimeo.com/user87970289/review/323958647/2b1b2d5925

  27. Her behavior was condescending and arrogant. She was acting more like the fascists. Her behavior was similar to what the Brown Shirts did in the Wiemar Republic in the 1930s.

Add to that the gentleman in question is Jewish.

  28. Hopefully she learned a valuable life lesson here & she does some serious soul searching. It’s just much more intelligent & kind to engage in polite conversation. You learn about people & we all have to live in this world together despite our differences, rather than become triggered on site. Obviously, she is a broken person & hopefully she finds healing. Maybe they can sit down together over lunch after the dust of this story settles & be civil…you know, break bread together.

  29. If a MAGA hat represents the worst in our country what does her look represent? White Privileged Palo Alto Ultra Conservative Wackjob?

    • Freakin’ hideous looking woman with a mohawk…wow, if that doesn’t scream for attention in a so yesterday sort of way. Ugly, ugly, individual.

  30. Is Dinesh DeSouza, a highly intelligent Trump supporting American of Indian ancestry a white supremicist? Trump supporters are the most discriminated against people in America.
The CIA Project Mockingbird Media is causing this division by constantly lying about Trump and his supporters. 5 Corpororations control 95% of the media. They have a World Government Agenda where America is no longer a sovereign nation.
The late night comedy shows have become weaponized against America because cable and national network news ratings are low. American minorities like me believe in putting Americans of all races before illegals and refugees. AMERICA IS A NATION, NOT A RACE. AMERICAN NATIONALISM BENIFITS ALL AMERICANS. We do not want the United Nations dictating our immigration laws. THE NEOCONS WHO STARTED ENDLESS WARS DISLIKE TRUMP. Trump is not funding the enemy like past Presidents. Liberals should be more concerned with the corrupt DNC stealing the primaries from Sanders instead of than abusing Trump supporters.

  31. Ah, yes, a fine example of the party of tolerance and acceptance, unless I disagree with you, and then you can expect bullying and harassment, and the rallying up a lynch mob to get you fired from your job, riots at your doorstep, and run out of town.

This chick is a freaking loon. What kind of person attacks a 75 year old man because of what he is wearing? The problem lies with this unhinged crazy.

  32. Palo Alto Human Rights Commissioner, Steven Lee, sounds just as psychotic as Rebecca Mankey. Marxism is alive and well in the South Bay.

  33. This person looks like she does and has the nerve to call out a 74 year old gentleman for wearing a MAGA hat? Freakazoid please!

  34. Are you liberal dingdong‘s have to do to secure Maga success in 2020 is just continue to open your mouths.
You have been flailing since November 2016 and are running out of gas. I know it and so do a lot of my patriotic friends. You never even gave the man a chance from the get-go… Very shameful

  35. I am a liberal and the man has a right to wear the hat without getting harassed. I may not like it but he is not hurting anyone by expressing his opinion.

  36. Hey Wesh, getting in someones face and yelling ,name calling etc etc ,screaming at people is assault. Verbal assault is real. I would have to punch anyone who starts screaming at me because of a mis guided since of superiority. The racist, bigoted, and all the other BS names attached to MAGA hat wearers is just that BULLSHYTE

  37. Longtime resident. This is inexcusable behavior. The Palo Alto community is mellow and diverse. No one should be verbally assaulted at a coffee shop. I’m also a customer at Gryphon and support their decision. She went way over the line.

  38. what a Biased story written by Daily Post Staff Writer ALLISON LEVITSKY.
You posted multiple photos of Rebecca Parker Mankey including whre she works and volunteers at, yet nothing about the MAGA wearing man you only describe as “Victor, a 74-year-old retired technical writer who frequents the Starbucks at 361 California Ave”

In my opinion if you wear a costume (such as the MAGA hat) and go to a house on Halloween night your bound to get candy whether you want it or not.
we all have a right to express ourselves in many ways including politically but we should also practice common sense that this is a very touchy subject that affects lots of people in the USA. You wouldn’t wear a Satanic Emblem to a Church and if you did , well you know there will be heated debate.
I was not born or raised in Palo Alto but that shouldn’t matter because we are all humans and we should be loving each other not hating one another.
Im not condoning Mankey`s actions but I am concerned that the Media again is always swaying one side or the other and that is pathetic.
Left Wing, Right Wing both part of the same Bird. Wake up Silent Majority…

    • This might be the most incomprehensible post I have ever seen.

      – The Daily Post RE-published public posts about the PERPETRATOR herself, after said perpetrator repeatedly posted and begged for people to follow her lead. Mankey put herself out there on the Internet.
      – The Daily Post did NOT post personal information about a man who did nothing other than sit and have coffee. Old man did NOT put himself out there on the Internet.

      >> “In my opinion if you wear a costume (such as the MAGA hat)

Since when is a baseball style cap a “costume?”

      >> and go to a house on Halloween night

Halloween night? What? Is coffee at a local establishment somehow like Halloween?

      >> your (sic) bound to get candy whether you want it or not.

Assuming this is a a continuation of the bizarre analogy to Halloween, who goes trick-or-treating and doesn’t want candy?

It seems you are trying to say that the victim was not expressing his right to free speech (by wearing a hat that represents support for the president of the United States), but was rather intentionally seeking to be victimized by a lunatic.

      >> we all have a right to express ourselves in many ways including politically but we should also practice common sense

In other words, don’t express your freedom of free speech that I don’t agree with. Use your common sense to know that you are surrounded by intolerance and will be attacked for wearing a hat. I bet you blame rape victims too.

      >> You wouldn’t wear a Satanic Emblem to a Church and if you did , (sic) well you know there will be heated debate.

As a church-going member who was born and raised in Palo Alto, I can tell you that no Christian Church would scream at anyone, threaten their job and community, or encourage others en mass to do the same.

      >> I was not born or raised in Palo Alto but that shouldn’t matter because we are all humans and we should be loving each other not hating one another.

LOL! And you think Mankey’s behavior was “loving each other?” If your statement above is to be believed, you should be strictly condemning her actions, not BLAMING THE VICTIM!

    • Beyond your “blame the victim” mentality, here’s a little more info you might want to consider before looking as stupid as Ms. Mankey: Victor’s Jewish, and wears a yarmulke under the MAGA hat.

She’s lucky the headline wasn’t more along the lines of “Hateful ‘Lady’ Screams ‘Nazi’ at 74 Year Old Jewish Man”!

BTW, by your reasoning, anyone dumb enough to wear an “I’m With Her” shirt in Alabama or Texas should expect similar treatment, which would be just as stupid as what Ms. Mankey did.

  39. With comments about hurting children as she made, I hope that she is not allowed on school grounds or anywhere near them or any places where children maybe. I am concerned that her behavior and views are shared by her husband.

  40. It’s a shame Mr. Lee is so un-discerning as to how his own public comments might sound to a moderate independent.

  41. “The MAGA hat at its best represents a distorted and inaccurate view of America”

Well, I can see someone else is part of the problem, too…

  42. Yes, it’s terrible living in California. Liberals have ruined the state. It’s hard for your average fascists to get by here without their snowflake sensibilities damaged on an annual basis. We MAGA hat wearers should really get the hell out of here to somewhere less challenging.
…JK. Y’all are welcome here: we’re all about diversity.

  43. I only get up to that area a couple times a year..and that is down at ARC, now I know to grab a room in Palo Alto instead of Sunnyvale..I’ll wear my red hat with pride… I anticipate this maggot coming at me, and she’ll get my brass hame knob cane between the eyes before it finishes one screech…

  44. Funny postings here! This lady should be run out of town but first be charged with verbal assault. On TV, the guy showed that he wears a yamika underneath and she had called him a Nazi! The fella seemed to get past the incident well but should sue her.

I have proudly left the Dems for the GOP due to the hypocrisy and insanity of the libtards. My grandparents immigrated legally to the U.S., the way it should be.

  45. While I do not agree with his politics, an old man was sitting bothering nobody and having his coffee. I am stunned that this woman was spewing the very vile hatred and disrespect that she claims to be against. Does she really believe that vile hatred and attack is Ok as long as she is the one doing it? What a hypocrite!

    • Exactly. And all without even a trace of self-awareness. What a sad, pathetic person, she is plainly not well psychologically.

  46. I’m Hispanic and in favor of anyone wearing a MAGA hat and exercising his/her right to display their beliefs, which is an extension of the freedom of speech. So sick and tired of Democrats claiming to not be racists, while displaying just how racists they really are. This woman is borderline insane. If I wasn’t a retired psychologist, I would be offering her my free services. Go Trump!

  47. See what happens when you forget to first put on your black ANTIFA mask on before you attack senior citizens and children.

  48. for all who are interested the palo alto human relations commission has a public meeting on the 11th coming up https://www.cityofpaloalto.org/gov/boards/hrc_bios/default.asp and locals should def go and call out steven for his lies, as he says we resist intolerance which is exactly what this was yet he openly supports her in this column, and his misguided approach to maga hats there is no doubt there are racists on both sides of the spectrum but certainly is not what the maga hat means or any other type of article of clothing. 2nd looks like at least two spots are opening up maybe some maga supporting people should get in there and set the idiot straight.

  49. the MAGA hat is not racist, nor are 99.9% of the people wearing it. you cannot say the same about the hate filled insane people that hate on it. if you have a problem with the MAGA hat, the problem is only between your ears. seek help

  50. Everybody knows faggots are only good for target practice and kindling on a fire. Stop treating these inferios like people and start shooting up their pedofaggot parades. They are weak they are inferior kill them all before they destroy your way of life. #TIMETOKILLFAGS

  51. I just cannot get over the fact that this plainly mentally ill woman is calling someone else a freak. Laughing so hard at the instant karma here.

  52. Why is it that these bottom feeding societal refuse types are always brave to harass young kids or elderly people, but never anyone that could turn around and knocked their teeth out.

  53. This story sounds like pure Kabuki theatre to me. I suspect both actors are agents provocateurs. Fishy all around.

  54. A 46-year-old white woman with a mohawk haircut who calls herself an activist and lives in Northern California? I call that a conformist.

  55. Liberal Lunacy at its finest! These people are as conditioned as Pavlovian dogs..attacking at the sight of a Red hat and they are too brainwashed to look in the mirror and THINK for themselves for 1 second!! Sick of these fascist, racist loons claiming to be about diversity and fairness..They are the antithesis of EVERYTHING they say they stand for and literally yelling at themselves in the mirror. Enough!!!!

  56. You know what the Palo Alto Daily Post left out of their article? Victor (the old man/victim) is Jewish, and wears a yarmulke under the MAGA hat!

As is typical of the Liberal “I know everything” mindset, it never even occurred to this “woman” that the man she was calling a white supremacist is in fact someone that the white supremacist would hate even more than, well, her.

Way to scream at someone about hatred, while in a fit of political-based hatred!

    • Good point, calling an elderly Jewish man a “nazi” is irony & insanity at its most ridiculous and VERY bad journalism to not mention that he’s Jewish.

    • A person can be Jewish, and still be a racist against people of color. That’s not mutually exclusive. Thus, your argument isn’t really any valid one.

However, considering that Trump is strongly supported by the KKK and white nationalists/supremacists among whom there are many anti-Semits, the support of Trump by some Jewish people puzzles me somewhat. Perhaps there is a big element of denial of this reality involved in this.

      • She also called him a Nazi. Is that mutually exclusive with being Jewish? The fact that some white supremacists support Trump does not mean Trump is a white supremacist any more than some Asians supporting him makes him Asian.

Thus, you do not know everything, no matter how hard you try to show us how smart you are.

        • That he was Jewish was probably not recognizable. According to the reporting he was wearing his MAGA hat above his yarmulke. Thus, she probably jumped to conclusions without knowing that he was Jewish. Surely, not all Trump supporters are Nazis, but anyone who is supporting Trump today is supporting his racist ideas and policies, agreeing with them, or by being in denial of or indifferent to them.

I didn’t say that Trump was a white supremacist because he was supported by those. That was just a strawman argument by you. Trump’s views on immigrants and his anti-immigration policies are quite compatible with the views and goals of white nationalists/supremacists, though. He is disparaging immigrants who come from Latin American countries almost daily, and, for instance, he publicly announced that he wants to end birthright citizenship. This has been a white nationalist/supremacist goal for a long time. Most immigrants nowadays are people of color, not “white” European anymore. Ending birthright citizenship would exclude the children of those immigrants from becoming citizens with the same rights, despite being born in US. All for the goal to maintain the dominance of “white” people in US. Thus, that Trump wasn’t a white supremacist with respect to his beliefs is debatable.

Comparing Asians with white supremacist is a category mistake. White supremacists aren’t a “racial” or ethnically defined group. White supremacy ideas are an ideology. Nobody is born a white supremacist.

Also, that is not the only time here that you are making a comment regarding my knowledge or intelligence. What’s up with that? Do you have an inferiority complex?

          • Correct, she couldn’t see his Jewishness any more than she could see anything else about his identity: ethnicity, background, multi-faceted political positions, social perspectives, or contribution to this great country. All she saw was a hat and thought that hat defined an entire human being, that she was superior to that human being, and that that human being deserved to have their life destroyed. Yes, what a tolerant and accepting stance she took, that you are now defending.

She had absolutely no idea who this man was, but that didn’t stop her from attacking like a mindless, rabid dog.

            You are no better.

You are doing the same thing: ASSUMING that everyone fits 100% into some political camp you either fully agree with or fully disagree with. YOU are part of the problem that is dividing this country. How dare you attack 50% of the country with your simplistic categorization of people who actually have many different problems, concerns, and ideals.

I see you are a big supporter of illegal immigration. I also see you, like many on the left, like to conflate legal immigration with illegal immigration when you claim Trump is anti-immigration. Ending birthright citizenship is targeting those that crawl over the border illegally so they can give birth on US soil, therefore having children that are natural US citizens (which is ridiculous and not what the founding fathers intended), and then get citizenship via chain migration. An illegal action suddenly becomes an automatic path to citizenship. How messed up is that?

I have acquaintances from Sweden and Germany that come to the US “on vacation” every time the wife is 8 months pregnant so their children are born here and enjoy dual citizenship, then they go back to their home country. Citizenship means public support for their lifetime. That means non-citizens come here, give birth, and then don’t contribute to our country and economy – they only come if/when they want assistance. Just like every illegal immigrant that manages to make it to US soil before giving birth suddenly becomes a beneficiary/burden of every US social program.

I am every bit as much against the European “vacation” birthright citizenship as I am the “crawl across the border” birthright citizenship. As much as the left keeps trying to make it about simple skin color, that is not the case. In fact, less-educated African-Americans are the most hurt by the immigration of low-skilled illegal immigrants – where is the outrage protecting our African-American CITIZENS?

Don’t we owe it to our existing citizens to provide education and healthcare to them first, before taking on the burden of people who come here illegally or come here for opportunistic citizenship rights?

Citizens contributing to the “pie” for their whole lives get less than adequate return when they need it because illegal immigrants / false citizens who have contributed nothing are taking from the same pie.

Trump’s stance has never been racist or anti-immigrant – it has always been anti-ILLEGAL immigration and anti-“take advantage of the US.” Of course you don’t understand that or don’t want to understand that because it’s way easier to vomit CNN/socialist BS without having a clue to the reality and the economic consequences.

I hope you are very, very rich so that you can personally give all of your money and assets to fund the economically and politically disastrous agendas you support.

Respond all you want with your high school term paper eloquence, I am done. *Thus*, I will not respond further to your false-narrative posts.

I wish you the best and pray you seek a more broad education of what is actually happening in this country and in the world around us.

            God bless you.

    • Yvan, didn’t you read the companion story on the Palo Alto Daily Post website? It clearly says he is Jewish. The Daily Post isn’t keeping that fact from their readers.

To quote from that story, “It seemed particularly ironic that Mankey called Victor a Nazi, he said, since he is Jewish. ‘I would call that just utterly irrational,’ Victor said. ‘Anyone with a high school education should know about the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan.'”

  57. Whether it’s the crime of assault depends on which state you live in. Each state has it’s own criminal code. Where I live, it is assault if the yelling causes the person being yelled at to be in fear of serious bodily harm or death. So, in my state, if Mr. MAGA was in fear of either of those, it’s assault. In some states, assault requires putting your hands on a person. I am NOT a Trump supporter by any stretch of the imagination. But, Mr. MAGA has a constitutional right to express himself by wearing his hat. As he correctly says, it’s a free country. And, by the way, IMO, this has nothing to do with liberalism. It’s just a simple matter of right and wrong according our Constitution, most state laws, and common courtesy. Whether you look at it from a legal, religious, or political perspective, the woman was just plain WRONG.By the way, for me, “liberal” means nothing more than how I vote in a particular election. It does not mean that the label fits 24/7/365.

    • So what? The MAGA hat wearing person has a constitutional right to express himself. What does this have to do with the woman yelling at him? Nothing.

  58. If Mankey just had said, “Sir, you are wearing a hat that is a symbol of a racist, proto-fascist cult that is led by a megalomanic narcissist and authoritarian sociopath. I disapprove of that.” And then left it at this. Would that have been civil enough?

I would like to know for my own reference how to properly approach a Trump cult member and telling this person my opinion.

    • Maybe try minding your own business instead of looking for conflict. Just because someone is wearing something I don’t like, or has a ridiculous and ugly mohawk, does not mean I need to walk up to them and push my opinion on them.

Would you want a conservative to walk up to you in a coffee shop, where you are minding your own business, and tell you how stupid they think you are because you don’t understand basic economics and the Constitution? That you obviously pay no attention to the lessons learned in history and that you are suffering from severe group-think but don’t realize it because you think everyone thinks like you do, and you’re too arrogant to consider that maybe you don’t know everything?

      Would you appreciate that?

      • 1. Your comparison is false. You want to claim that wearing a MAGA hat is no one else’s business, except for the one’s who is wearing it, like wearing a mohawk. Latter is a fashion choice and indeed just this person’s business. Wearing a MAGA hat is not a fashion choice. It was not created for that. It was created to spread Trump’s propaganda. And people usually wear it not for fashion, but for making a political-ideological statement of support for Trump’s policies. And that makes it also my business. These policies affect everyone in this country one way or the other, and not just in this country, but many people all over the world. The ones who are wearing a MAGA hat are the ones who are pushing their opinion onto others in the first hand. (I, as an immigrant with an immigrant partner who is Hispanic and many immigrant relatives who are Hispanic, take the policies for which the MAGA hat stands personal.) You can’t rightfully expect that the others for whom this is a provocation don’t respond to that and won’t push back.

        2. If you walked up to me to tell me how stupid I was because I didn’t know basic economics or the Constitution, that would be your right to do so. I would respond to you by asking you what evidence you believe to have for your assertion. The evidence can’t be that I was wearing purple nail polish today, since that is just a fashion choice. You wouldn’t know what to answer and you would walk away, defeated and embarrassed.

        • Jan P. – A hat is not spreading propaganda. Handing out a flyer supporting Trump would be propaganda. The hat shows support for Trump. This guy could be a one-issue supporter of Trump. Maybe he supports the right to carry a gun and solely based on that, he supports Trump. He’s not “spreading” anything by wearing the hat.

Maybe he is a racist. The hat does not declare he is a racist. It really doesn’t matter. It doesn’t give anyone the right to assault someone just for sitting in a coffee shop.

How do you know why people wear what they wear? Huge assumption. Are all politically related items are worn to provoke, or only the ones that provoke you?

By your logic, if someone is wearing something provocative, they should expect some sort of reaction from others.

If someone walks around with a Bernie Sanders shirt, can they be expected to be yelled at and called a Socialist?

In a civil society, we are able to accept different points of view, even when we disagree strongly with them.

If you don’t like people supporting Trump then try to convince them to change their support. Work harder on removing him from office.

  59. to paraphrase Voltaire “I may not agree with what you say but I will die for your right to say it” In this case I would say I might not agree with what you wear but you have the right to wear it with being harassed. Is there a doubt in anyones mind that the woman was completely wrong in what she did and what she said? I am definately not a Trump fan but I support the right of those who are to express their support and speak their mind without being harassed and threatened. I was not there when it happened so I can only base my opinion by the stores I have read but it seems to me that the woman would have been arrested and charged had the man chosen to call the police and file a complaint. Losing her job because of her actions seems to me a mild punishment.

One comment on the discussion above. I have found that people who have a CCW are some of the most polite and law abiding people you will meet. They have gone though pretty deep background checks and a lot of training. They are not the people you need to worry about shooting anyone that is not trying to shoot them or someone else.

  60. This lady and people like it need to be locked up in a mental institution for life.

I am very disappointed there is no video of her insanity uploaded to tbe internet.

  61. I’ve been thinking about this. I don’t think this woman was out of control, I think she was attempting to provoke this man into a physical response so she could play the victim and have an example of how horrible trump supporters are. That this man didn’t lose his cool spoiled her plan and enraged her.

  62. you may not like it, you mohawked freak, but we still have the freedom of speech in the country…even in “your town.” And it is most definitely NOT your right or duty to take it away from anybody. If I was in that old guy”s position you would have served papers for a civil law suit by now.

    • I guess you don’t know what the right to free speech actually protects. It doesn’t protect you from being yelled at by another person. Thus, for what would you file a civil law suit then?

  63. Bayshore Progressive Dems put out a statement that Mankey was doxxed on right wing media…WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? The woman is a raving lunatic in a mohawk harassing an old guy drinking his coffee. She gives the term ‘nasty woman’ a whole new meaning. And BTW I am a lifelong democrat (hopefully voting for Buttigieg). Hopefully Mankey gets the psychological help she obviously needs.

  64. I like how this lunatic lefty claims “this is her town”….who the F does this freak think she is? Talk about being triggered. A hat with a campaign slogan on it that the left falsely claims means hatred and they get triggered and react with hatred and violence? Yep, makes sense.

  65. You neglected the element of fear of imminent bodily injury, which makes it assault. There does not need to be any physical contact for an assault to take place.

  66. Good grief, what kind of freak show is that woman?!

Yeah, I said it. People who present themselves in that fashion want nothing more than to irritate others and get attention. It’s childish and silly. And they cannot be taken seriously. How she acted perfectly matches her appearance.

She is disgusting, uninteresting, shallow and ignorant. She is indeed a clown.

  67. This is exactly why the leftists are not running the country.
I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND PRESIDENT AND I WILL PROTECT HIS NAME WHENEVER NECESSARY BUT I WILL NEVER SCREAM IN SOMEONES FACE OR HARASS THEM FOR THEIR POLITICAL VIEWS. There seems to be a lot of nut cases out there attacking people who have a Trump hat or bumper sticker. They have no class. They’re like monkeys.

  68. But, Lee said, Mankey’s confrontation at Starbucks showed that she had “allowed herself to be pulled down” into the “muck” of political polarization.

People like her……live in the muck. They’ve been down there so long they can look down on you….from the muck…..as YOU walk by. It really is an alternate universe when some deranged bird like Lesbian screecher is considered normal……and a plain vanilla veteran in a Pro-American ball cap is considered odd.

  69. How can anyone take seriously someone who has appropriated the Mohican’s culture and gone off the reservation like this woman?

  70. She was inciting people to harass him in the coffee shop and later on Facebook by posting a picture of him … Like it or not, he shares the same liberties of expression and freedom of speech as she does, but you cannot infringe on other people and try to cram it down their throats. Everyone can disagree with anything, but spewing hate muddles your message, makes you irrelevant, and proves counter-productive; plus it’s just plain tacky. She wanted attention and got it in a big way. Moral of the story: Be careful what you wish for…

  71. She referred to him as a Nazi. She wants to attack him for his right to free speech. Who is the Nazi in this case?
