The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner has identified two drivers who died in a five-car crash on Interstate 280 in Los Altos Hills.
Brenno Henrique De Sousa Bittancourt, 19, Belmont, and Benjamin Alexander Hernandez, 33, of San Jose, were killed around 5 p.m. on Thursday near the Foothill Expressway exit.
A Lexus headed north on the freeway veered off the road and crashed into the center concrete median, overturning onto the I-280 southbound lanes.
When the Lexus overturned, it crashed into a Kia SUV going south. The Lexus driver was ejected and landed on the southbound freeway.
A tire from the Lexus flew off and hit a Toyota sedan, killing the driver of that car.
Two cars driving ahead of the Kia, a Tesla SUV and a Toyota SUV, were both damaged by debris from the Lexus.
The crash closed down the southbound lanes of I-280, detouring traffic to Magdalena Avenue for more than four hours.
De Sousa Bittancourt was living in the United States with only his brother, according to an online fundraiser. His family has raised $10,553 to cover his cremation and arrangements to return his ashes and personal belongings to his mother in Brazil.
