Redwood City schools’ parcel tax in trouble

Redwood City School District’s Measure C, a parcel tax based on the square feet of a property, appears to be failing in the first batch of ballots counted tonight. The measure needs approval by 66.7% of voters.

So far the results show:

Yes 4,262 57.50%

No 3,150 42.50%

If approved, property owners would pay a tax based on the square footage of their home or building. The rate was 17.5 cents per square foot. The owner of a 1,000-square-foot home would pay $175 per year.

The tax would last for eight years.

Proponents argued that the funds are critical in order to offer competitive salaries to teachers.
