Canepa defeats Irizarry for Assessor

San Mateo County Supervisor David Canepa will become the county’s next Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder, succeeding Mark Church, who is retiring.

In Tuesday’s primary, Canepa beat the second-in-charge in that office, Jim Irizarry, by a 9-percentage point margin.

In Election Night returns,

Canepa 36,329 — 54.67%

Irizarry 30,124 — 45.33%

While late-arriving ballots still must be counted, it would be impossible for Irizarry to overcome a 9-point deficit.

While the other members of the board of supervisors supported Irizarry, Canepa had the backing of labor in the campaign. Irizarry decided to spend his own money in the race while Canepa tapped donors who had contributed to his campaigns before.

A handful of employees came out against Irizarry. Management Analyst Alicia Garcia alleged a hostile work environment and being forced to work long hours without pay to meet department deadlines. Canepa described the internal problems of the Assessor-Clerk-Recorders office as a “dumpster fire.”

  1. Just my opinion of course but Canepa has been unstable, aggressive and at times self absorbed during the board of supervisors meetings. Something seems shady about him, hopefully with a political change he will not turn out to be corrupt and crooked. Too many politicians end up being bought and support issues because someone supported their campaign.

    • Super Vague @Losing Sight.

When and how has he been aggressive unstable and self absorbed. You just character slammed him with your words without any substance. Then you make a vague claim about him being shad and then an even broader claim about politicians. You have so many sentences that don’t say anything at all.

  2. Dear Supervisor David J. Canepa,
We are thrilled and happy that you made it. We have been your supporter since the first time of your career when you start campaigning as Supervisor of San Mateo County, District 5. Our vote speaks you are the right person on the job. The truth is; we pray for you. CONGRATULATIONS!

  3. Daly City was left beautiful with those pot hole rides on most streets, We at “Acme shock absorbers and Alignments” love the work you didn’t work for. Thank you Mr. Canepa!
