A coordinated group of at least 10 thieves ran into the Neiman Marcus store at Stanford Shopping Center this afternoon and took more than $150,000 in handbags, police said.

The thieves are at large. Nobody was injured and no weapons were used.

At 12:20 p.m. today, dispatchers received a call relaying second-hand information about a man who supposedly had a gun inside the Neiman Marcus store. Officers arrived and soon learned that there was no man with a gun, but rather that a massive theft had taken place.

It turned out that five men and five women entered the store and grabbed 43 handbags, some of which they physically ripped off security cables, causing some glass in the display cabinets to shatter.

They ran out of the store and fled in three vehicles before police arrived.

Police believe that at least two more suspects were acting as getaway drivers but didn’t enter the store.

Police suspect somebody mistook the sound of the breaking display cabinet glass to be a gunshot. There was no evidence that any of the thieves were armed.

The total value of the handbags was more than $150,000.

Witnesses could only describe the suspects as black males and females, all of whom were wearing face coverings and hooded items of clothing.  The three vehicles were described as a white Ford Mustang, a dark blue Infiniti four-door sedan, and a white Infiniti four-door sedan.

  1. Next week Apple, and the following week Nordstrom? Time for retail stores to re-think their luxury merchandise display strategies.

  2. Stores should consider not allowing Hoodies to be worn in stores.
Tough enough to recognize perps while they are wearing a mask.

  3. even if the police do catch these thieves, Proposition 47 will keep them from being charged with a felony since each individual handbag is probably below $1000. Retail businesses are being driven out of California. Walgreens closed all their pharmacies in San Francisco due to thefts.

  4. This is probably the 1,000 th time this has happened and police still can’t catch them! How hard would it be to put a police car in the parking lot and another at the entrance to the Dumbarton Bridge? Our cops are paid well — why are they so lazy!
