Aenlle offers different explanation for Hawaii trip

Victor Aenlle, former chief of staff to San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, offered another explanation today as to why he was in Maui at the same time as Corpus — a trip that investigators have said is evidence the two were having an affair.

The allegation that they were having an affair — which they both deny — is central to the county’s case that Corpus engaged in nepotism. The Board of Supervisors has voted to fire Corpus, and she is appealing that decision in a hearing that is playing out in a Redwood City courtroom.

Today, Aenlle testified that when Corpus asked him for help during her trip to Hawaii, he didn’t hesitate to say yes.

But last year, when Aenlle sat down for a recorded interview with retired Judge LaDoris Cordell, he said he had no idea that she was going to Hawaii. He said it was a coincidence and that he barely saw her when he was there.

Aenlle told Cordell last year that he was in Hawaii on a “covert” security detail for a high-net-worth person whose identity he didn’t disclose.  As for Corpus, he said: “Barely even saw each other. I think we crossed paths, but she was there with her family and her brother.”

The supervisors hired Cordell to investigate complaints against Aenlle and Corpus, and Aenlle gave the retired judge an interview, a transcript of which is contained in Cordell’s report.

Corpus hasn’t been consistent with her explanation about the Hawaii trip either. In October 2022, County Counsel John Nibbelin visited Corpus at her office in the Millbrae sheriff’s bureau, where she was captain. She told Nibbelin that she just got back from Hawaii with her then-husband, according to the Cordell report.

In fact, he didn’t travel with Corpus and their children to Hawaii. But Aenlle was on the same flight at Corpus, according to the Cordell report.

    • I have the inside scoop. When the kids came back from the Hawaii trip they told their father that Aenlle was with them on the trip. Everyone is lying under oath. It is so sad.

  1. All their lies are catching up to them!!! Blatant perjury by both the corrupt Sheriff and her filthy boy toy. The judge is seeing right through the nonsense they are spewing! Buh bye

  2. They’ve both changed their stories on this at least 2 or 3 times! First they weren’t there together. Then he was acting as her body guard. Then he was acting as someone else’s body guard. Then he was helping her with her kids, one of whom cried about him taking her dad’s seat on the allegedly sold out flight. It seems like they threw a whole lot of fecal matter against the wall to explain it before they decideded on what would stick. If it walks like an extra-marital affair, and it quacks like an extra-marital affair, chances are, it’s an extra-marital affair…

  3. On Monday the 18th, under oath “She (Corpus) claimed Aenlle was on the flight to help her with her son who has special needs.” If this hearing can’t get their stories straight, perhaps the Grand Jury trial will? Or will we have to wait for a criminal trial for perjury?

  4. First he says he happened to be on the same flight as Corpus because he was going to Maui to provide security for somebody he won’t name. Later he says he went to Hawaii to help Christina with her children. So which is it, Victor?

  5. If you tell a lie, you should remember it. Mr. (NOT Dr.) Vicky is full of more stuffing than Teddy Ruxpin. Also, are we to believe he didn’t carry his firearm into court today out of respect for the Judge? C’mon. Not because it would be a felony to carry a firearm when you’re not an on-duty sworn peace officer into court? News flash: your self-issued CCW doesn’t apply to you when you’re appearing in court either.

  6. Tom Perez, former head of civil right of the Justice department has joined Corpus team? Interesting. I know of San Mateo citizens who contacted Perez a decade ago when he was head of Civil Rights about misconduct in the Sheriff’s office by deputies and sheriff (not Corpus) and other San Mateo government officials. Good to have an outsider on the team

  7. The way I see it no matter how you slice it or dice it both the sheriff and Victor have now admitted to traveling to Hawaii together with her family and her employing Victor they are violating county nepotism rules. On top of that there’s multiple people that have been Transferred demoted fired arrested put on leave based on the opinion of Victor who is not qualified to have access to all of the information and personnel records at the sheriff office. This is completely unacceptable Any institution corporation or law-enforcement office completely unethical. There’s no judge that will listen to this and not find an issue with the information that has come out Blaming this on the county manager is just so beyond unbelievable.

I have never asked a subordinate to travel on a family vacation with me nor have I ever asked a close friend to be hired into a position. They are clearly not qualified for nor have I taken the opinion of multiple people. I work with and ignored it because I’m friends with somebody The fact that the sheriff cannot admit her wrongdoing or any wrongdoing from Victor is a problem of ethics and morals and values in itself she should be ashamed of herself.

  8. If nepotism is going to lose your job, then in my city a good portion of staff should lose their jobs.SM County government is not what you know it is who you know.
This was a revenge tour by sheriff staff to protect their enormous over time pay. The underlings took a swat at the sheriff Pinata, and the Board of Supes are getting the last whack. Law and Order does not win here. It will be business as usual with the next sheriff.
