Menlo Park’s Planning Commission Monday (May 20) will review plans to build a three-story, 16-bedroom boarding house on Willow Road, near the VA Hospital.
The project would be built next to Menlo BBQ at 555 Willow Road, according to plans submitted by Berkeley developer Reza Valiyee and architect David Caydon.
It would involve tearing down an office building at the site that has been vacant for 10 years, according to a report prepared by Senior Planner Kaitie Meador.
People would be able to rent a room, which would have a connected bathroom, for up to a year, Meador said.
Valiyee has proposed having 14 parking spaces, but Meador said the city wants the project to have 16 spaces.
The Planning Commission considered a different project by Valiyee at the same location in 2014. He proposed two five-bedroom apartments and wanted to include the dilapidated building that shares a lot with the restaurant in the project, Meador said.
But the commission recommended that Valiyee instead tear down the vacant building and build everything but the restaurant from scratch, according to Meador.
