A Palo Alto man was almost extorted out of $300 after he sent a racy video to a stranger he met on Facebook, police said.

Around 4:50 p.m. on May 1, the 23-year-old man told police that a woman had contacted him on Facebook and started chatting.

The chat turned into a video chat, and the woman asked him to send her a sexually explicit video of himself.

The woman captured the video and then threatened to send it to all of his Facebook friends if he didn’t buy her a $300 CVS gift card, police Agent Heather Souza said.

The man didn’t buy the gift card and instead reported the extortion to police. Detectives were unable to find a match for the woman’s name or phone number.

“He was not out any money, just a little embarrassed,” Souza said.
