Here’s the latest look at who has signed up to run for various city and school district seats in the Daily Post’s circulation area. The deadline to file is Aug. 7. If an incumbent who is eligible to run for reelection hasn’t decided to run again, the deadline is extended until Aug. 12.
Palo Alto City Council
Three City Council seats are up for election. Seats belonging to Council members Ed Lauing, Julie Lythcott-Haims and Vicki Veenker are up for grabs. Lythcott-Haims isn’t running again, but Lauing and Veenker are. Other candidates:

Palo Alto School Board
Incumbents Shounak Dharap and Shana Segal will not be running again, meaning voters will select two of the five school board members. Other candidates:
• Avery Wang
• John Craig
• Linda Henigin
Menlo Park City Council
Menlo Park is divided into five council districts. This fall, seats in three of the districts (1, 2 and 4) will be up for grabs.
District 1: Two-term incumbent Cecilia Taylor isn’t running again. Parks and Recreation Commission member Wonman Lee will oppose James Rohr to replace Taylor for the district that includes Belle Haven.
District 2: Incumbent Drew Combs is seeking reelection and will be challenged by Finance and Audit Commissioner Vamsi Velagapudi. District 2 includes the Willows and Suburban Park neighborhoods.
District 4: Charlotte Reed and Laura Melahn have decided to run for the seat that has be held by Betsy Nash. District 4 includes Allied Arts and Downtown and central Menlo Park.
Los Altos City Council
This will be the first election in Los Altos where the city is broken up into five districts, each with about 6,334 residents. Two districts are up for grabs in November. The other three will be decided in the 2028 election.
• District 2: Cindy Langley Andrews and Anky van Deursen are running against each other to represent south Los Altos in the area around Grant Park. Councilman Pete Dailey isn’t running for reelection in south Los Altos so he can run for the Valley Water board.
• District 4: Councilman Larry Lang has pulled papers to run for the district around downtown and the civic center.
Mountain View City Council
Three seats are up for grabs. The candidates so far are James Kuszmaul, IdaRose Sylvester, Erik Poicon, Robert Cox, Silja Paymer, Paul Donahue and Alexander Amoroso. The incumbents who hold those three seats are Ellen Kamei, Alison Hicks and Lucas Ramirez, all three are termed out.
Redwood City Council
Three seats are available this year, in Districts 2, 5, 6.
• District 2 includes the Bair Island, Redwood Village and Marina areas. Chris Sturken represents District 2.
• District 5 encompasses the Redwood Oaks neighborhood and parts of Palm Park neighborhood. Kaia Eakin represents District 5.
• District 6 includes the Woodside Plaza, Redwood Oaks, Palm Park, and Canyon neighborhoods. Diane Howard represents District 6.
All three incumbents have filed for re-election.
San Carlos City Council
Three seats are available this year. The incumbents who hold those seats are Pranita Venkatesh, Adam Rak and Sara McDowell. All are seeking re-election.
Portola Valley Town Council
Three seats are available this year. The incumbents who hold those seats are Craig Taylor, Mary Hufty and Judith Hasko. Taylor and Hufty have filed paperwork indicating they plan to run again.
Woodside Town Council
Two of the council’s five seats are up for grabs this year.
• District 2 includes parts of Woodside along Kings Mountain Road and parts of Emerald Hills east of Interstate 280. Incumbent Brian Dombkowski lives in District 2. Lyle Weaver has filed to run.
• District 3 includes communities south of Woodside Road and north of the intersection of Woodside, Portola and La Honda roads. Incumbent Dick Brown lives in District 3. Daniel Druker has filed to run.
Atherton City Council
Three seats are available. The incumbents are Stacy Holland, Rick DeGolia and Bill Widmer. So far, incumbents Widmer and DeGolia have filed for re-election. Christine David, a community volunteer who ran for council in 2020, is also running, according to City Clerk Anthony Suber.
Belmont City Council
Three seats are available, for Mayor, Districts 1 and 3. The incumbents are Mayor Julia Mates, Robin Pang-Maganaris (District 3) and Gina Latimerlo (District 1). It appears Pang-Maganaris is not running again. Sarah Delisle is running for her seat.
East Palo Alto City Council
Two seats are up for grabs, held by incumbents Ruben Abrica and Martha Barragan. As of Tuesday, no one has filed to run yet, according to City Clerk James Colin.
Belmont-Redwood Shores School District
The board is switching to districts instead of at-large elections after a threat of a lawsuit. Three seats are available this fall, for Trustee Areas 1, 3 and 5. The incumbents are April Northrup, David Koss and Jackee Bruno.
• Trustee Area 1 includes the Ballot Book in Belmont and Redwood Shores neighborhoods. Tony Hung has filed to run.
• Trustee Area 3 includes neighborhoods west of El Camino Real and Bayshore Freeway.
• Trustee Area 5 includes neighborhoods east of El Camino Real and Interstate 280.
San Mateo County Board of Education
This county-wide board has five seats, three of which will be elected in November.
• Trustee Area 1: Incumbent Susan Alvaro holds this seat, representing people in the Belmont-Redwood Shores, Cabrillo, La Honda-Pescadero, San Mateo-Foster city, San Mateo Union and Sequoia Union school districts.
• Trustee Area 2: Incumbent Beverly Gerard vs Dana Johnson. Trustee Area 2 includes Bayshore, Brisbane, Jefferson Elementary and Jefferson Union.
• Trustee Area 3: Edith Arias is the incumbent whose territory includes the San Bruno Park, San Mateo Union and South San Francisco school districts.
San Mateo County Community College District
Seats serving two districts are available this fall. In Area 2, Michael Patrick Guingona represents Trustee Area 2. In Area 4, incumbent Richard Holder represents Trustee Area 4. Both have filed for re-election.
San Mateo County Harbor Board
Two seats are up for grabs, in Districts 2 and 3. The incumbents are George Domurat (District 2) and Kathryn Slater-Carter (District 3) and they are running again.
Foothill-De Anza Community College District
• Area 2: Alexander Gvatua, appointed incumbent
• Area 4: Pearl Cheng, appointed incumbent. Liangfang “Liang” Chao is the only one to file so far.
Los Altos School Board
The seats of three incumbents are up for grabs — Brandon Stroy, Bryan Johnson, Vaishali “Shali” Sirkay. Stroy is an appointed incumbent. The only candidate to sign up is David Poll.
Mountain View Whisman School Board
The incumbents, who were appointed to their jobs, are Devon Conley and Bill Lambert. Only Conley has signed up to run again.
Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School Board
• Area 1: Nir Paz is the only candidate so far, and there’s no incumbent for this seat.
• Area 2: No candidate has signed up
• Area 3: Incumbents Catherine Vonnegut vs Thida Cornes
Los Altos Hills City Council
No candidates yet. Two seats up for grabs belonging to George K. Tyson and Kavita Tankha.
Sequoia Union High School District
This district has territories for each board member and this year the seat for Trustee Area A and D are up for grabs. The Area A incumbent is Amy Koo, who is running again, who will be facing a challenge from Alon Shrian. The Area D district’s incumbent is Sathvik Nori, who is also running again and facing a challenger, Michael Dekshenieks.
Woodside Elementary School Board
Three seats are available this year. The incumbents whose seats are up for grabs are Jenny Hayden, Amanda Peiffer and Brett Westervelt
San Carlos School Board
Three seats are available this year. The incumbents whose seats are up for grabs are Sarah Cassanego, Boris Lipkin and Q Hamirani. So far only Lipkin has filed to run again.
Las Lomitas Elementary District Board
Three seats are up for grabs. At this point, incumbents Gautam Nadella and Heather Hopkins have signed up to run again.
Portola Valley School Board
Two seats available. One candidate so far, Robert Kang Xing Jin.
West Bay Sanitary District Board
Two seats are available. Incumbents Edward Moritz and Roy Thiele-Sardina have signed up to run again.
Ravenswood City School Board
Three seats are available this year. The incumbents whose seats are up for grabs are Mele Latu, Tamara Sobomehin and Laura Nunez.
Redwood City School Board
Incumbents David Weekly and Cecilia Marquez are up for re-election. So far only Weekly has filed.
Menlo Park City School Board
Three seats are up for grabs. The current incumbents are Jed Scolnick, Sherwin Chen and Scott Saywell. So far, Chen and Scolnick have filed for re-election. Parent Maya Herstein has also filed to run.
Sequoia Healthcare District Board
In this election three seats are up for grabs, in zones A, C and E.
• Zone A includes eastern parts of San Carlos and Belmont, Redwood Shores and a pocket of Foster City. William Fong represents Zone A.
• Zone C includes San Carlos and the Emerald Hills neighborhood of Redwood City. Rosanne Foust represents Zone C.
• Zone E includes parts of Belmont, Emerald Hills, San Carlos, Woodside and all of Portola Valley. Incumbent Gerald “Jerry” Shefren resigned earlier this year and the person appointed to fill his seat, Brian Greenberg, has filed to run.
Menlo Park Fire Board
Three seats are available this year. The incumbents are Chuck Bernstein, Gary Bloom and Robert Jones.
Santa Clara Valley Water Board
There are four seats open, but voters in Palo Alto, Mountain View and Los Altos will be asked to vote for district 7. The incumbent is Palo Alto resident Rebecca Eisenberg. Los Altos Councilman Pete Dailey is running for the seat.
El Camino Healthcare District
Two seats are up for election, the incumbents are Peter Fung and George Ting. So far only Fung has filed to run again.
