Court stops collecting certain types of fines

Presiding Judge Julie Emede

The Santa Clara County Superior Court is no longer collecting fines for missed appearances and late payments.

Presiding Judge Julie Emede signed on order on Monday to suspend the fines, or “civil assessments,” because the court is transitioning to a new collections agency.

Emede said her order applies to late fees and missed appearances for criminal hearings and traffic tickets since Jan. 1. Her order will continue indefinitely until she signs another order.

Emede encouraged people with questions regarding their case status and payment obligations to review their case online or contact the appropriate court division.

Under California law, courts can add a civil assessment of up to $300 in eligible cases.

Civil assessments are most commonly associated with traffic and infraction matters, but they may also be imposed in certain misdemeanor or felony cases when a person does not appear as ordered, court spokeswoman Jessica Kellogg said yesterday.
