Donnellan wins judge race

In a landslide, Deputy District Attorney Brian Donnellan has won a seat on the San Mateo County Superior Court, defeating Santa Clara County Chief Assistant District Attorney Jay Boyarsky.

In Election Night results,

Donnellan 51,594 — 80.12%

Boyarsky 12,798 — 19.88%

State law allows a resident of one county to run for an open judgeship in another county, but Boyarsky lacked the local roots of his opponent. Donnellan, 51, of San Mateo, grew up in the area and has over 20 years of experience working in the DA’s office

In the month leading up to the vote, it appeared as if Boyarsky wasn’t even campaigning. Boyarsky, 60, from Palo Alto, applied with the Governor’s Office to be a judge in 2007 and again in 2023 but wasn’t selected after a review by the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation. Boyarsky also ran for judge in 2008 but finished in fourth out of five candidates.

  1. People of San Mateo made a good decision. Donnellsn by far the better candidate. You didn’t mention that boysrsky ran twice and lost both times in his own county. Cheat case of carpetbagging.
