Armed man arrested after standoff

An armed man going through a mental health crisis was in a standoff that began Saturday night and continued until this morning (May 10), according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies got a call and went to the 500 block of Warrington Ave. in North Fair Oaks at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told deputies that a man later identified as Jose G. Gaytan, 34 fired shots into the air and retreated into his home where he lives with several relatives including an infant and a 92-year-old grandmother.

A woman left the home and said that Gaytan was suffering from a mental health crisis and was armed with a handgun. Deputies negotiated with Gaytan through the night while they worked to get all of the family members out of the house. Gaytan continued to refuse to leave the home and threatened to shoot deputies, according to the sheriff’s office. At 6:20 a.m. today, deputies fired gas into the house and got Gaytan to leave, when he was arrested and taken to jail.

Gaytan was booked on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, shooting at a home, child endangerment and violating a protective order.
