School lockdowns lifted after call of man with a gun

Update 3:35 p.m. — Menlo Park Police issued an update to the incident saying that the man who died was a missing and suicidal person from outside of the county that authorities were looking for because he was armed with a gun.

After getting calls about the armed man, police surrounded the man’s car and tried to talk to him, but he did not respond, and police saw a handgun on the man’s chest, according to spokeswoman Nicole Acker.

Police used drones and an armored vehicle to approach the man’s vehicle, and were able to confirm that the man was dead.

2:38 p.m. — The reported gunman in West Menlo Park has taken his own life near St. Denis Church. It appears he didn’t harm anyone.

1:30 p.m. — Lockdowns for the La Entrada and Phillip Brooks campuses in West Menlo Park were lifted at 2 p.m. after police received calls that there was a man with a gun near St. Denis Church.

The schools and the area of Avy Ave. and Monte Rosa Drive were shut down after police were told that a man with a gun was near the church at 2250 Avy Ave. The lockdowns were put in place at 12:38 p.m.

Fire officials were called to the scene to treat a medical emergency due to the man having a gunshot wound, according to radio dispatch.

Police used a drone to find the man, according to Menlo Park police spokeswoman Nicole Acker. 

When the report of a man with a gun first came in, officers from Menlo Park, Atherton and San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office surrounded the neighborhood.
