A Redwood City math tutor was sentenced to 1 year in jail today (Dec. 15) after taking a plea deal for texting lewd messages to a 17-year-old coworker and trying to meet up with her, a prosecutor said.

Pouya Asrar, 38, pleaded no contest on Aug. 22 to attempting to meet a minor with whom he worked. He was sentenced today and must turn himself in on Jan. 26, said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.

Asrar’s wife read a letter in court today saying she forgave her husband and is now taking care of her mom with dementia, Wagstaffe said.

Asrar had been working at Mathnasium as a tutor for a year when he met a 17-year-old coworker on Nov. 19, 2023, Wagstaffe said. The next day, Asrar started sending her messages on GroupMe telling her how pretty she was and asking about her sex life, Wagstaffe said.

Asrar was telling her about lewd acts and asked her to meet with him, the DA said.

The teen told the owner of the tutoring company, who then called the police on Nov. 21, 2023, according to Wagstaffe. Redwood City police started messaging Asrar, acting as the teen and asked to meet up at the Wendy’s at 1852 El Camino Real, Wagstaffe said.

Asrar said he was going to take her virginity and bring extra underwear, not realizing he was talking to the police, Wagstaffe said. Once Asrar arrived at the fast food restaurant, he was arrested, and the police found condoms on him.

Asrar is out on $50,000 bail and has to turn himself in on Jan. 26, Wagstaffe said. He will also have two years of supervised probation and has to register as a sex offender, Wagstaffe said.
