CHP says drunken driver caused fatal accident on 101

The CHP said a drunken driver caused a chain reaction collision on Highway 101 in East Palo Alto early Sunday (Aug. 10) that killed one person and left two others with major injuries.

Two other people suffered minor injuries in the four-vehicle collision, including a man who was allegedly driving under the influence when he rear-ended another driver at about 2 a.m., which began the sequence of other collisions.

The man was driving northbound in a white Acura SUV, when he allegedly rear-ended a gray Toyota Rav4 just south of University Avenue, the CHP said in a statement.

The driver of a third vehicle — a white Subaru SUV — crashed into the Toyota immediately after the initial collision, before crashing into the median and suffering injuries that were fatal.

Meanwhile, a fourth vehicle, a BMW, crashed into one of the stopped vehicles.

Firefighters and paramedics responded and pronounced the driver of the Subaru dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the Toyota were hospitalized with major injuries.

The driver of the Acura was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing injury.

The CHP asked anyone who witnessed the collisions to contact the agency’s Redwood City Area Office at (650) 779-2700. — Bay City News

  1. Thousands and thousands of people drive each day, to and from work, school, shopping etc. Yes, there are some accidents, a very small % involve alcohol. Lets stop the hysteria and work on something we can fix. Or cure.
