King Plaza outside of Palo Alto City Hall, 250 Hamilton Ave., will be the local location of the national “Good Trouble” rally on Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

The title of the rallies here and in 1,200 other cities was inspired by the late Congressman John Lewis’ call to make “good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.”

According to a statement from the rally’s national organizers, they plan to protest several things including what they say is the Trump administration’s “extreme crackdown on our civil rights;” the targeting of “Black and Brown Americans, immigrants, trans people and others with hateful, dangerous policies,” and budget cuts to social assistance programs such as adding work requirements to Medicare (known as Medi-Cal in California).

Speakers at the Palo Alto event include:

• LaDoris Cordell, retired Santa Clara County Superior Court judge;

• Mauni Jalali, attorney specializing in constitutional law;

• Carolyn Hoskins, founder of Domini Hoskins Black History Museum;

• Lisa Ratner, co-president of the League of Women Voters of Palo Alto;

• Alice Smith, founder of National Voter Corps.

In addition to the speeches, the local rally will have musicians, a letter-writing table and a presentation of Congressman Lewis’ final words.

  1. They ought to be praising Trump —

    Reduction in inflation

    Lower gas prices

    Virtually no illegal border crossings

    No more missiles from Iran or its proxies

    Companies moving factories back to the US

    A budget surplus in June — first time we’ve had a monthly surplus since 2017

    On Thursday, celebrate Trump’s accomplishments!

    • Best of all, establishment of concentration camps for innocent immigrants and withdrawal of their rights to due process, followed by wholesale deportations, often to places they’ve never been. I can only hope that the same soon happens to you MAGAts.

  2. I haven’t seen any attempt by Trump to end people’s free speech. In fact, they seem to be speaking more than ever before. Could somebody with this rally let me know how their “free speech” is being trampled by the current administration. I don’t see it happening.

  3. Did you miss Trump forcing settlements from CBS and other media companies for reporting news he didn’t like? Did you miss Trump threatening to primary out GOP members who opposed his moves to defund PBS and NPR? Did you miss him threatening to take away citizenship from media figures who oppose and/or question his positions? Did you miss him firing the DOJ attorneys who worked on the case(s) against him which was just them doing their jobs?

  4. So is this the only place we’re allowed to speak now that paloaltoonline.com has become a one way radical communist propaganda oulet

  5. Let’s unpack your comment, JAM.

    Trump got $15 million from ABC News, which repeatedly misstated the verdict in the Jean Carroll case. That’s libel per se. Look it up. He got $16 million from CBS which intentionally edited a Kamala Harris interview to make her look more intelligent than she is, and give her an advantage in the election. While not libelous, it represents election interference — a charge Democrats toss around continually. Are you saying that charge only spplies to Republicans?

    As for primarying candidates, are you saying only Democrats can do that, not Republicans.

    Public broadcasting — Are you saying conservatives should be forced to pay for media they disagree with? If PBS and NPR are so great, why can’t they fund themselves with donations? How angry would you be if you were forced to fund Fox News?

    How many media figures have lost their citizenship due to Trump? Please provide me with the number. Rosie O’Donnell is still a US citizen last time I checked. (Knew you were worried about her.)

    And, just for the record, when presidents take office, they typically replace their US Attorneys in each district. Clinton, Bush and Obsma all did it.

    A personal question: Do you throw out allegations without doing any research? Or do facts get in the way of your narrative?

  6. “Anonymous” did a great job responding to every point JAM made. Wanna bet that the libs won’t answer Anonymous’ questions and will just respond with bumper sticker phrases. You know, “Trump is Hitler” or “Trump hates Blacks.” No evidence or facts, just crap they’re reciting from NPR.
