An East Palo Alto man has been on weapons charges after he was chased by San Mateo police after a car stop.
Arrested Jose Garciabarron, 38, on Friday.
At 8:30 p.m. Friday, police pulled over a car near S. Humboldt Street and Third Avenue because they believed the vehicle’s owner was wanted on an outstanding warrant.
As the vehicle stopped, a man later identified as Garciabarron, fled on foot with a satchel in his hand, police said.
Officers chased him and he eventually stopped around the 1000 block of Second Avenue, and then appeared to access something inside of the satchel, police said.
Officers told Garciabarron several times to stop accessing the satchel, but he failed to do so. Fearing he might have been reaching for a weapon, an officer fired his Taser at Garciabarron, police said.
Then Garciabarron threw the satchel over a fence, police said. Then, since Garciabarron was refusing to obey police commands, a second officer fired a Taser at him. Then Garciabarron complied and was taken into custody, police said.
A search of the recovered satchel revealed a loaded Glock pistol with a round in the chamber and a drum magazine containing 36 rounds, police said.
A records check showed the Glock was stolen. Garciabarron was also found to be a convicted felon and had two outstanding warrants.
After receiving medical treatment, Garciabarron was taken to the San Mateo County Jail in Redwood City, where he was booked for four weapons charges, resisting an officer and possession of stolen property.
