San Mateo County Supervisor Ray Mueller said today he wants to start the process to remove embattled Sheriff Christina Corpus.

Mueller, who was a spokesman for the county following the release of retired Judge LaDoris Cordell’s report about Corpus and her former chief of staff Victor Aenlle, addressed his silence since Measure A passed.  March 4, over 90,000 voters approved Measure A, which gives the supervisors the power to remove Corpus.

“I have been purposefully quiet since Measure A passed to avoid accusations of bias, but this morning I feel compelled to speak,” Mueller said during the meeting. “I would like to say to the many stakeholders and every witness on both sides of the matter waiting for the process to begin with respect to the Sheriff’s Office, we appreciate your patience and value your voices. I am frustrated by the delay. Supervisor Canepa, a few weeks back, you stated as president of this board that you didn’t care how long this process took. Respectfully, I disagree.”

Canepa said it will take about six months to remove Corpus once it begins the process the board finalized on May 7. But the process has not started, and no one has said when it will.

“I believe it is possible to be both time-efficient and fair. Fairness doesn’t just apply to the Sheriff. It applies to those who work in the Sheriff’s office and the residents of this county. It’s time for this board to move forward with the process and whatever action the board may or may not take,” Mueller said.

“All of us are committed to making sure that we come and work together collaboratively on a due process. I want to make sure that as we move forward, it’s not just the president of this board; it’s us collectively and collaboratively working together. I know we are acutely focused on due process and remain there,” Canepa said during the meeting.

During the May 7 meeting, Mueller was accused of bias, alongside Supervisor Noelia Corzo, by Corpus’s attorney Thomas Mazzucco, demanding that they not take part in the vote to remove Corpus. Mazzucco has said the board is being unfair by acting as the accuser, prosecutor, judge, jury and appellate body during the planned removal process.

Mueller and Corzo acted as the board’s representatives in November following the county’s release the 400-page report by Cordell about Corpus and Aenlle’s conduct in office. Corpus has been accused of retaliation, nepotism, making racist and homophobic comments, conflicts of interest, and running jails with an unusual number of deaths.

Opinion: Time to get going on firing Sheriff CorpuS

  1. Alright peeps, it time to start canvassing to collect recall signatures asap. Politicians are showing their incompetence by merely grandstanding and dragging their feet. When you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself. We the People had to step up and recall Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, and District Attorney Chesa Boudin. It’s long overdue to add Corpus to the recalled list of shame.

  2. Homicide trials in this county have been adjudicated quicker than the “process” to remove the Sheriff. The voters have spoken. BOS do your job. Start the removal process NOW! Issue Corpus the Notice of Termination.

  3. Every day she remains in office provides another opportunity for a multi-million dollar lawsuit against the County.

  4. And… the narrative stays the same- nothing continues to happen to Corpus and she continues to be in charge of torturing her staff with terrible choices. The lawyers are uniformed of what she is truly doing and they point out illogical points. Measure A does not impact anyone else except Corpus through 2028 then it is null and void. Maybe the supervisors could have had some removal reasons ready to go in April- the employees have only been supplying information for over a year and continue being retaliated against. But hey let’s be fair to the corrupt Sheriff and ignore the 800+ staff.

WE ALL IMPATIENTLY AWAIT CONSEQUENCES FOR THESE ACTIONS!

  5. How infuriating to ask for help and be ignored. What is the point of this ballot measure and hiring lawyers to implement a process if everyone just goes about their days posting random things on social media as if nothing serious is going on in San Mateo County with the Sheriff. Lots of social events to attend to meanwhile no time to serve the Sheriff with her removal notice to start the Measure A process. Makes no sense.

  6. Was Aenlle really in the Instagram post driving a car in his reserve outfit in the San Carlos event last weekend? As if he should be representing the Sheriff office. More proof the Sheriff gives all her power to run the office to this so called man.

How shameful if this is actually true. It does look like him in the video clip posted on the sheriff office page.

  7. The fact that a deputy has put his name on one the comments here clearly shows how dire this situation is. BOS do your job!

  8. Why can’t the supervisors immediately suspend her with pay pending the due process hearing? That’s how a lot of firings happen these days. An employee’s immediate supervisor knows the employee committed a “firing offense”. But the supervisor doesn’t have the authority to fire the employee. So he puts the employee on paid leave and brings the matter to the attention of HR and possibly the company’s lawyers. They decide how to handle it. If it’s not a firing offense, then the suspended employee is brought back to work, but doesn’t have anything to complain about because he or she was paid during the suspension. If it was a firing offense, the sooner the bad employee has left the workplace, the better for everyone. Corpus’ continued presence leaves a toxic atmosphere. She can intimidate witnesses who might testify against her. If nothing else, she can bring her dog to your desk or locker and have it pee on the floor right in front of you. Thank you Mr. Mueller for saying this. Hopefully this process will be speeded up.

  9. I applaud Captain Fogerty’s strength and courage for finally speaking up. Unfortunately, he’ll likely be punished by Corpus and subjected to some heinous retaliation, as have some of his peers. Stay strong Bill. Justice will eventually be served upon Christina and her minions.
