San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus and County Manager Mike Callagy are at odds over whether Victor Aenlle, the sheriff’s former chief of staff, can return to the sheriff’s Redwood City headquarters, possibly bypassing a ban that limits his access to the building.
Aenile, who was fired on Nov. 13 by the Board of Supervisors, will be assisting with the sheriff’s unit that approves concealed carry weapons (CCW) permits.
On Nov. 13, Callagy banned Aenile from any part of county buildings where the general public is not allowed.
As the Post first reported Monday, Corpus sent an email on Thursday to her IT supervisor instructing him to give Aenlle access to the computer system.
“Mr. Aenlle is a fully qualified reserve deputy for over 17 years and has been informed by the county attorney that he is allowed to be in any county workspace where reserve deputies are allowed,” Corpus said in a statement sent by spokeswoman Gretchen Spiker. “Mr. Aenile will be reviewing and processing CCW applications.”
The Post didn’t get an answer to the question about whether Aenlle would be working at the sheriff’s office or from home. The applications for gun permits are confidential.
Reserve deputies are not paid and volunteer their time, according to Corpus’ statement. It’s unclear if Aenile will be working out of the sheriff’s headquarters on the fifth floor of 330 Bradford St. in Redwood City.
Aenile can enter the headquarters if Corpus accompanies him, county spokeswoman Michelle Durand said.
Aenile has been back in the building at least once since his firing. Surveillance video showed Aenlle entering the sheriff’s office on Jan. 23 along with Corpus, her puppy; Jackie Vargas, who was Victor Aenlle’s former assistant; and contractor Manjit Sappal.
Capt. Mark Myers said at the time he believed Aenlle was armed when he entered the building. Meyers also said that female employees were intimidated by his presence given the allegations that he and the sheriff had intimidated and retaliated against employees in the past.
County Counsel John Nibbelin at the time said Aenlle’s presence was OK because Corpus is an elected official.
Corpus says Aenile is back because there was an increase in concealed carry requests, which has created a backlog that the sheriff’s office is trying to address, according to Corpus.
“As sheriff, I have the authority to assign reserve deputies to work anywhere there is a need. It has historically been the case, and continues to be the case, that reserve deputies work in a variety of functions in the Sheriff’s Office,” Corpus’ statement said.
Another unanswered question that remains is whether Aenlle is eligible to be a reserve deputy. Retired Judge LaDoris Cordell raised the issue in her scathing report into complaints about Aenlle and Corpus. Cordell found that Aenile hasn’t completed the volunteer hours to qualify as a reserve deputy, yet he is holding himself out as a police officer.
He had not kept up with the volunteer requirements to maintain his status as a reserve deputy, Cordell said. “Even worse, it appears that he likely falsified his volunteer hours when he entered them into the database,” Cordell said in her 408-page report.
A “designated Level 1” reserve deputy has to volunteer for 192 hours per year and obtain training from the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, or POST, according to state law.
Aenlle only entered his volunteer hours after Cordell reached out to him for an interview, and he appeared to be double-dipping by logging volunteer hours as time he actually spent working as Corpus’ chief of staff, according to her report.
“Judge Cordell’s report raised serious concerns about his eligibility,” Durand said.
Durand did not respond to the Post’s questions about whether Nibbelin still regards Aenlle as a reserve deputy and referred the Post to sheriff’s spokeswoman Spiker, who then said to ask Durand. Inquiries to Aenlle about his new position went unanswered.
Cordell’s report also accused Corpus of nepotism, intimidating her employees, making racist and homophobic slurs, and retaliation. She has also been accused of arresting a critic and firing an employee who gave Cordell an interview for her report.
Aenlle is returning to the sheriff’s office as the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors slowly starts the process to determine whether to fire Corpus after the passage of Measure A, which gives the board the power to remove the sheriff.
County officials are still working on the process, according to Durand.
He put in no Reserve time for two years because his ego was too big to serve alongside the rank and file as a mere Reserve Deputy, while he was busy crapping on them. POST should have decertified him by now. He clearly did not meet the standards. He should be required to complete a recertification course before returning to any Reserve duties. But once again the rules don’t apply because he’s Christina’s boy, and Christina is Victor’s girl. Sooner or later POST will have their say, and sooner of later Chritina will get booted from office (and hopefully prosecuted) and Victor won’t have her protection any more, and he will be GONE (and hopefully prosecuted as well).
Isn’t Aenlle at all embarrassed that he will be returning as a reserve deputy when he left ( got canned) as Chief Of Staff ? He is looked st by all as a pathetic leech on to Christina He needs her so badly to stay in the SO and just can’t let go. Dude has zero self awareness.
If Victor was still a reserve deputy then why did Christina need to put him back on the active list.
Someone needs to look into the double dipping on his time cards that the retired judge had mentioned in her report.
Over the past decade—probably longer—there’s been a noticeable shift in law enforcement where entitlement seems to have replaced the values of humility, discipline, and service. It’s frustrating to witness, especially from individuals like Aenelle, who have had every opportunity to earn their keep but repeatedly fall short. He’s never fully committed to the mission or shown the kind of resolve it takes to put everything on the line when it counts. That kind of commitment isn’t optional—it’s foundational.
Coming from the Grunts/Marines, I know exactly what it means to earn your place and prove your value. You don’t get a seat at the table because you want one—you get it because you’ve bled, trained, and sacrificed for it. Aenelle doesn’t embody any of that. Instead, he prioritized getting access to a cabinet with suppressed rifles, as if the gear itself somehow made him mission-capable. It doesn’t. That kind of responsibility belongs to those who are trained, capable, and mentally prepared to use it with intention and discipline.
Then came Corpus stepping into leadership at the SO, and somehow, Victor found a way to wedge himself into the mix—taking on an interior role that conveniently avoids the responsibilities tied to being a reserve deputy. It’s frustrating because it’s clear he’s trying to be part of something he hasn’t earned.
Victor, let’s be honest—you don’t have the traits, mindset, or skill set required for this kind of work. And that’s not meant to be cruel—it’s just reality. You come off like someone desperate to play a part, but you lack the readiness and understanding that the role demands. It’s not just about being eager—it’s about being prepared. Right now, you’re giving tactical Elmer Fudd vibes. And in any real-world setting, you’d be the Carl in the platoon—the one who doesn’t belong and becomes a liability.
This isn’t about gatekeeping. It’s about standards. Not everyone meets them—and pretending you do is not only misguided, it’s potentially dangerous.
And final thing I want to say the Victor personally… F!@# You.
Christina, you should be ashamed of all the problems you’ve created. That said, it’s not entirely your fault. See, you’ve been a “zero” from the day you joined the Sheriffs Office, but former leaders like Greg and Carlos placated you and promoted you far beyond your abilities. While you fooled many voters with the “sheriff you can trust” BS, you could have had a great tenure petting comfort Doodles and serving ice cream to disenfranchised youth, while collecting a fat paycheck. However, you alienated a dedicated and experienced command staff who could have proudly and competently run day-to-day operations, but you drove them from the office and instead, surrounded yourself with unqualified people much like yourself. At the end of the day, you do not deserve to serve the people of San Mateo County, nor lead the brave and committed men and women of the Sheriffs Office. Your tenure is but a stain on the proud history of San Mateo County law enforcement and serves as the antithesis for what it means to have the privilege and duty to serve our community.
I couldn’t have said it any better myself forever CHP.
In Corpus’ attempt to bring Aenlle back into the office in any capacity, the County Manager, Board of Supervisors and Human Resources Department should immediately resume their investigations into the HR complaints filed against him and immediately put his attempted return on pause. Once those investigations are complete, as well as their investigation into whether he ever completed the hours required to maintain any Reserve Officer status, those findings would be produced publicly. It should be noted how illegal it was to insert Reserve Volunteer hours into the database (all in one day) at the same time while working as her full time boy toy at a $260,000+ paid salary. If Wagstaffe would do his job, a Warrant and criminal charge should be forthcoming! All of this should take months … and months … and by then, Chrissy will be long gone and no use to the little man.
Here’s one for you … if Aenlle is supposed to be doing CCW permits, it should be known that he has absolutely no knowledge or training in the countywide or statewide systems necessary to run criminal histories on applicants. He has no knowledge of CJIS or even how to run a query into whether an applicant has ever been arrested; no knowledge how to run an inquiry to find out in any system if a CCW applicant is a gun owner or what their criminal history might be. These are systems necessary to investigate a CCW applicant and sign him/her off as clear. The one person that would be giving him the training and authorization to run criminal history is the current Records Manager that was present during his tirade at the good-bye party in the very office where the previous Records Manager he berated and insulted filed an HR complaint against him then left. Ironic! Yeah, this is another good choice Corpus! Let’s all sit back and wait for the next HR Complaint and Lawsuit!
I am now convinced Mr Aenlle is unstable. This is scary folks.
What normal ,reasonable human being would return to a place where they are unwanted and despised. The guy is literally obsessed with the Sheriff s Department . He cant let go and I am getting stalker vibes here.
Sociopaths always think they are the smartest person in the room.
This may be the most accurate of all the comments on this entire Corpus/Aenlle mess. Fixation on the Sheriff’s Office may be an understatement.
Basically, Aenlle wants access to email and is looking for that to find dirt on people- and or there is another vendetta going on.
What are they really up to?
Why exactly is the county not stopping this and why exactly are people not writing to the attorney general to do something about corpus. Besides millions of wasted dollars in tax payer money this is such a violation of labor laws and the deputies suffer!
Corpus behavior is DESPICABLE and lacks morals and ethics!
