Woodside’s town council is the latest board in San Mateo County to endorse Measure A, which could lead to the removal of Sheriff Christina Corpus on allegations of abuse of power, retaliation, intimidation, homophobia, racism and conflicts of interest.
Council voted 4-1 on Tuesday (Feb. 25) to endorse the measure, joining other Mid-Peninsula city councils.
Councilwoman Jennifer Wall was the lone “no” vote.
Wall said that while she would personally endorse Measure A if asked, she was swayed by the five residents who asked the council not to endorse the measure.
Resident Thalia Lubin said she could not recall a time when the town had taken a position on something like Measure A. She also said that her coffee group is pretty evenly divided as to how they will vote on the measure.
“I am worried it sets a precedent. It doesn’t represent everyone in town,” Lubin said.
Councilman Paul Goeld said endorsing Measure A is different from endorsing a state measure since the sheriff’s office is Woodside’s police department.
“This isn’t some academic or esoteric issue for me. I have a perfect right to comment on the person in charge of our law enforcement,” Goeld said.
The Board of Supervisors put Measure A on the ballot after receiving a report on an independent investigation by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell that sustained findings of nepotism, abuse of power, retaliation, intimidation, homophobia, racism and conflicts of interest.
Cordell also found Corpus “relinquished control” of her office to her alleged boyfriend and former Chief of Staff Victor Aenlle, a real estate broker who has left deputies demoralized by his paranoid obsession with loyalty, Cordell said.
“Nothing short of new leadership can save this organization that is in turmoil,” Cordell said in her report.
If voters approve Measure A on Tuesday, that will allow the Board of Supervisors to fire Corpus and name her replacement.
