Aenlle denies accusations in 9-page rebuttal (link)

Victor Aenlle, the former chief of staff to embattled San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus, has come out with an nine-page, single-spaced rebuttal to the allegations made against him in a report by former judge LaDoris Cordell.

Here’s Cordell’s report.

And here’s Aenlle’s rebuttal.

His rebuttal begins with the allegation that he has been having an affair with Corpus. He calls it “baseless hearsay” and claims the unnamed employee made the allegation after “failing to secure a promotion and raise.” Aenlle doesn’t respond to the claim that he bought Corpus $1,200 Louboutin boots and $11,000 diamond earrings from Tiffany’s. Cordell’s report includes a picture of Corpus showing off the earrings.

As for the allegation that he exceeded or abused his authority, he responds, “From the outset, Cordell failed to recognize my position and authority within the organization. As executive director of administration/chief of staff, I was a key member of the executive team, actively involved in the day-to-day operations of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.” He said that on the Sheriff’s Org chart, “My authority was clearly represented in the organizational chart … (and) I worked under the direct direction of the sheriff on critical tasks and special projects.”

Aenlle echoed what Corpus has said publicly, that they have been trying to change the culture of the Sheriff’s Office. Corpus, who had worked in the sheriff’s office for 20 years before becoming sheriff, said the agency was dominated by “good old boys.”

“Meaningful change is never met without resistance. When you demand accountability, expect people to do their jobs, and insist on fair treatment for all, pushback is inevitable,” Aenlle wrote.

He flatly denied retaliating against whistleblowers. “Whistleblower complaints are not uncommon across county departments, yet none have been subjected to the level of scrutiny and unfair investigation that we have endured.”

He disputed the claim that he and Corpus fired Assistant Sheriff Ryan Monaghan for speaking to Cordell. “The report conveniently omits critical context and fails to hold individuals accountable for their own actions,” he wrote. He said Cordell should have interviewed Undersheriff Dan Perea, who he said was present during the firing.

The Cordell report included a picture of Aenlle and then presidential candidate Donald Trump at a Sept. 13 fundraiser in Woodside. The report leaves the impression that Aenlle maneuvered his way to be photographed with Trump.

“The Secret Service agent involved is Monaghan’s close friend. I do not recall the situation as it has been portrayed, and there was no ‘scene,’” Aenlle wrote.

Aenlle doesn’t explain why he wanted to be photographed with Trump.

It’s unclear how Aenlle’s report would be used. If voters approve Measure A on Tuesday, the Board of Supervisors will hold a hearing to determine if Corpus should be fired. At that hearing, Corpus or her lawyer would be allowed to make their case why she should remain as sheriff, and then the supervisors would decide whether to fire her.

The supervisors have already ended Aenlle’s contract with the county and County Manager Mike Callagy has barred Aenlle from non-public parts of county buildings, including the sheriff’s office. However, he is allowed to visit the non-public areas if he is accompanied by Corpus or another elected official.

At the end of the rebuttal, Aenlle puts above his name:

Wrongfully terminated,
Former Chief of Staff
Victor Aenlle, Ph.D.

  1. He is a delusional MORON! He is a questionable reserve deputy at best. He was never nor will he ever be qualified to be on the “Executive” team. Corpus has been very flagrant and reckless with her affair with a MARRIED man! She violated County Nepotism policy. They both need to be arrested for their serious criminal behavior. ENOUGH of this jackass!!

  2. Doesn’t care about titles…… yeah right He threw a fit when he wasn’t introduced as the Doctor Chief of Staff at the Santa Clara Sheriff’s graduation ceremony. They are both egomaniacs.
