Five men wielding a sledgehammer ransacked a smoke shop in Los Altos, police said.
The crew targeted Discount Cigarettes Cigars at 4546 El Camino Real in the Los Altos Village Court strip mall at San Antonio Road and El Camino. The robbery occurred at around 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 22, city spokeswoman Sonia Lee said.
The men threatened the employee and stole the cash register, several cartons of cigarettes and vape pens, Lee said.
Officers found their getaway car on Sylvan Way in north Los Altos, Lee said.
The Chrysler 300 and its license plates had been stolen in Hayward, Lee said.
Two days earlier, four men robbed a store on Woodside Road in Redwood City, also wielding a sledgehammer.
The clerk armed himself with a legal gun and confronted the men, causing them to flee, Redwood City police Lt. Jeff Clements said.
The clerk was moving items an hour later when the gun in his pants pocket accidentally fired, hitting him in the leg, Clements said.
