With an extremely close race, Redwood City Council’s race could be decided by tens of votes.

Voters are deciding between Planning Commissioner Isabella Chu versus incumbent Lissette Espinoza Garnica in District 3 and Marcella Padilla versus Diana Reddy in District 7.

After yesterday’s 9 p.m. update, Chu, 56 was leading over Espinoza Garnica, 28, by 64 votes and Padilla, 37, was leading over Reddy, 76 to 59 votes.

Looking to represent Friendly Acres in District 3, Chu wants to remove Espinoza Garnica and focus on increasing the city’s parks and making it safer for bicyclists and pedestrians.

Chu had 52.42% of the vote and Espinoza Garnica had 47.58% as of 9 p.m.

Padilla had 50.87% and Reddy had 49.13%.

With councilwoman Alicia Aguirre not running for reelection, Reddy and Padilla are looking to represent District 7 in the westernmost area surrounding Farm Hills Road. Padilla, a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, got involved with local politics and wants more funding to be set aside or parks and wants to find ways to encourage drivers to slow down.

Reddy is seeking a return to council after her stint on council from 2018-2022, she left after the city was carved into districts and she ended up in Aguirre’s district. Reddy wants to focus on affordable housing, public safety and expanding mental health treatments for the homeless.
