State Sen. Josh Becker and Assemblyman Marc Berman are holding a town hall meeting next week to talk about the long-awaited repaving of El Camino Real throughout Palo Alto, Los Altos and Mountain View.
It’ll be the first time that Caltrans officials have talked about the project publicly since last winter’s storms did heavy damage to the road. Potholes have damaged cars and caused motorcycles to wipe out.
“El Camino is one of the worst state highways in the Bay Area, and I know the community is eager to receive a status update from Caltrans about how quickly the conditions are going to improve on this important transportation artery,” Berman said in a statement today (Nov. 6).
Berman and Becker’s announcement doesn’t say when the repaving will take place. Caltrans still lists the project online as tentatively beginning this fall, but residents and local transportation officials are skeptical.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if it had been pushed back,” Los Altos Transportation Manager Marisa Lee told her city manager in July, according to emails obtained by the Post.
The project isn’t just repaving — Caltrans is planning to replace all of the parking spaces with bike lanes too.
Councils in Los Altos and Mountain View have approved the new bike lanes, while Palo Alto hasn’t weighed in.
The town hall is on Nov. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Zoom and at the Mountain View Community Center at 201 S. Rengstorff Blvd.
