Verta Mae Thompson

Sunrise December 19, 1929 – Sunset February 9, 2023

Verta Mae Thompson was born on December 19, 1929 outside of Houston, Texas. She was the youngest of three children born to Jesse Brown and Roberta Kizzee.

Verta eventually moved to Houston where she started her career at the Veterans Affairs Hospital (VAH) as well as establishing a practice as a beautician. While at the VAH she met her husband Oswald Thompson and they migrated their blended family to California eventually settling in Palo Alto.

Verta Mae was devoted to and beloved by her family which covered five generations. She was loyal to her friends and an established presence in the community. During her time in Palo Alto the couple owned several small businesses and were well renowned for their multi-state travels to sell at flea markets and antique shows. She was an avid bowler and bingo player who enjoyed cooking, traveling, camping, gardening and dancing.

Verta was a devout Southern Baptist and an active and engaging member of the Jerusalem Baptist Church in Palo Alto, CA for over 35 years.

She is preceded in death by; her loving husband for over 40 years Oswald “Ozzie” P. Thompson and her sons Steve Johnson and Carl Johnson.

She leaves in mourning her family of children: Elaine (James) and Mark; her stepchildren, Verdina, Allen, Martha, Michael (Lori), Robert, and Jacquelyn (Girard); her daughter in law Marion and a host of great-great grandchildren, great-grandchildren, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
