Opposition is growing to a bill in the state Legislature that could allow four housing units in many places where one single-family home now sits — density that critics say belongs elsewhere.

And much of the controversy over Senate Bill 9, by Sen. Toni Atkins, D-San Diego, relates to different interpretations of how many homes the bill would allow on a single-family lot.
