A 56-year-old woman was shot and killed yesterday (Sept. 7) by her ex-boyfriend during her birthday party in East Palo Alto, police said today.

Cynthia Mose, 56, of Stockton, was shot by Joey Harris, 55, of Stockton, after they stepped outside of the building where her birthday party was taking place at 1720 W. Bayshore Road, according to Cmdr. Jeff Liu.

Police arrived at the scene at 11:11 p.m. after getting a notification from ShotSpotter, a system that picks up the sounds of gunshots in East Palo Alto.

Officers tried to save Mose, but she died on the scene, Liu said.

The two had traveled to East Palo Alto together for the party, which was also a memorial for Mose’s brother, who died earlier in the year, according to Liu.

After Mose was shot, Harris got in a car and drove away, but partygoers quickly identified Harris as the shooter, according to Liu.

Harris turned himself into the Stockton Police Department earlier today. East Palo Alto police went to Stockton to pick up Harris and booked him into jail in Redwood City on suspicion of murder.

Harris is in jail on no bail and is set to appear in court tomorrow, according to the county’s inmate database.

This is the fourth homicide in East Palo Alto this year.

On Jan. 28, Alexis Pulido Garcia, 28, of Hayward, but previously of East Palo Alto, was shot on the 900 block of Mouton Circle.

On Aug. 2, Antonio Martinez Moradel, 23, of Oakland, and Roberto Velasquez Martinez, 23, of Chico, were found in a crashed car suffering from gunshot wounds.

No arrests have been made for either case.
