Truck driver dies after crashing into Palo Alto fire truck on Highway 101

The Embarcadero Road-Highway 101 interchange in Palo Alto.

One man has died after a box truck rear-ended a Palo Alto fire truck that was responding to a crash at 4:30 this morning on southbound Highway 101, south of Embarcadero Road.

The fire truck had responded to a solo-car accident at 3:29 a.m. involving a black Honda Accord. CHP officer David Morey said the Honda driver crashed due to high speeds and suffered minor injuries.

Around 4:30 a.m., the box truck struck one of two fire trucks that were in the slow lane of 101, Morey said.

The driver of the box truck was taken to Stanford Hospital, where he died.

There were no fire personnel in the fire truck at the time of the crash.

The southbound freeway was closed for a couple of hours so hazmat crews could clean up 100 gallons of diesel that spilled onto the roadway.
