Stanford’s trustees have decided to change the name of Serra Mall to Jane Stanford Way and rename the Serra dormitory and a small academic building with the Serra name due to Father Junipero Serra’s history of inflicting violence and violence on Native Americans.
University President Marc Tessier-Lavigne will seek approval from Santa Clara County and the U.S. Postal Service to rename Serra Mall, the pedestrian and bicycle mall at the front of the Stanford campus.
The decision, announced today (Sept. 13), follows a lengthy process at the university involving a committee that established new principles for renaming campus features named for historical figures.
Here’s a news release from the university about the changes.
