Opinion: Ticket splitting will stop reform of school district

If you want to reform the Palo Alto Unified School District, don’t split your ticket between a status quo candidate and a reformer.

This fall, voters will pick two candidates for two openings on the five-member board.

Three candidates are running for the two seats: Linda Henigin, the status quo candidate, and two reformers, John Craig and Avery Wang.

The current composition of the board is 4-1 favor of the status quo. If you ticket split, and pick the status quo candidate and one of the reformers, the composition of the board will be 3-2 — three for the status quo and two reformers.

As a result, nothing will change.

If you elect both reformers, the board swings to 3-2 in the direction of reform.

Voters need to decide if they want reform or the status quo. In other words, is PAUSD on the right track or wrong track?

  1. There are good things about picking up another seat, which is going to be automatic. In two years you can defend one and pick up another, then you’re running things.
