License plate that fell off car leads CHP to suspect in fatal hit-and-run

The CHP was able to solve a hit-and-run fatal accident on Highway 101 in East Palo Alto because the driver’s license plate fell off during the crash.

Irma Elizabeth Oxlaj Vargas, 38, of Redwood City, was killed at 6:05 a.m. Thursday in the transition lane from University Avenue to southbound Highway 101.

The CHP believes she was hit by an Acura TL driven by Julian Adame Jr., 18, of the Central Valley town of Kingsburg.

The license plate led officers to an abandoned Acura TL on Leota Avenue near Vargas Elementary School in Sunnyvale. That helped them track down Adame in Cutler, Tulare County, where he was arrested at 12:15 p.m. Thursday, the CHP said.

Officers took Adame to the San Mateo County Jail where he was booked on felony charges.

Investigators are trying to determine whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the fatal crash.
