Palo Alto police are investigating a fatal one-car collision on the Oregon Expressway.
On Sunday (Aug. 16) at 11:49 p.m., police dispatchers received a call about a major collision that had just occurred on Oregon Expressway in the underpass of Alma Street.
Officers responded and found a man in his 50s unconscious in a sedan. The man was extricated from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said the man’s sedan was traveling westbound on Oregon Expressway and, according to witnesses, collided with the walls of the underpass as it was travelling through it.
Personnel from the Police Department’s Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) team responded to the scene to continue the investigation.
Police said that at this time it is unknown if drugs or alcohol were a factor. The cause of the collision remains under investigation. Police do not believe any other vehicle was involved.
The roadway was closed for about six hours so officers could safely investigate the collision.
Police are not releasing the victim’s identity. Identification will come from the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner-Coroner.
