Mountain Lion on the loose in Palo Alto

File photo of a mountain lion.

Police are looking for a mountain lion that’s on the loose in Palo Alto.

The big cat was first spotted in the 700 block of North Hampton Drive in north Palo Alto, not far from Greene Middle School.

It was later reported in the 1900 block of Byron Avenue in the Old Palo Alto neighborhood, about three blocks from the Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo. Police said it was likely to move again.

While the mountain lion didn’t display aggressive behavior, “Residents in the immediate area should be aware and keep pets indoors,” police said.

Animal Control officers and personnel from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife have responded.

Residents should call 911 if they see the mountain lion, police said.

    • Annika my dear I’m with you! Please don’t kill him. Mountain Lions and other woodland creatures are continuously being pushed out of their habitats and no one seems to care! So I’m with you, relocate him, don’t kill him.

      • Unfortunately, the sad truth here in CA, it is Against The Law to trap and relocate these (mountain lion, fox, raccoons etc etc) creatures. They are required to put these animals down. I’m not joking. Regulations such as this make me ashamed to be a human. Don’t believe me, you are just in denial.

  1. We’ve been here before… & the authorities shot & killed it.
Just give the kids a day off from school, tranquilize it and relocate it and give it a nice big dinner- its probably starving to death or it wouldn’t be near people. It probably followed the creek down and there might be bigger boys in the territory It was born in defending that space.

  2. Last time we had such a visitor, the authorities shot & killed it & turned out upon autopsy it was a starving juvenile with a completely empty stomach, starving to death.

  3. “On the loose” as if it’s normally in a cage? Or it’s just a wild animal existing in habitat that has become suburban sprawl and not displaying any aggression? Fear mongering

  4. Odds are good that if it doesnt return to the hills, and the authorities find it in the vicinity of people, they will kill it. It’s has shown itself to people for one of two reasons. It’s either starving or it’s sick. Let’s hope he eats and wonders off.

  5. Coastal Area has an exploding mountain lion population, the natural prey of deer is diminished, along with most smaller wildlife. The lions are now targeting livestock, farm animals and domestic pets.

  6. Did any public official verify spotting a lion? I saw the video but a large part of me believes it was AI generated by some rather bright PALY students as a prank. I could be wrong. If I am, the lion was quietly dispatched so the public of non understanding would not cause a scene. Maybe it was chasing those non native turkeys we are starting to see?

    • Hal, do you have a reading problem? It’s the police who put out the warning about the Mountain Lion.

      • Yes, I can read, I can also critical think. Did any of them say they “saw” a lion? Closures for safety were all that was mentioned. Where’s the pics. by public officers? If there was a lion, why no pics. released to public? Seems that there was no lion or someone in a government position decided not to tell the public about their decision to dispatch.

  7. Hal, you’re on to something. Did you see the black hawk helicopters hovering in the Old Palo Alto neighborhood on Saturday? Or the chemtrails last week? I watched it all from the grassy knoll. The CIA had hired a gunman who, armed with an Italian carbine rifle, was ready to shoot the mountain lion from the 6th floor window of the PAUSD school book suppository building.
