Stanford Athletic Director Bernard Muir, who oversaw the Cardinal’s move from the Pac-12 to the ACC, is expected to resign from his position before the end of the school year, according to reports by ESPN, the New York Times and others.

During his 13-year tenure, the football and men’s basketball teams have struggled. The football program hasn’t won more than four games since the 2018 season, which was the last time they played in a bowl game. Stanford hired alumnus Andrew Luck last November to serve as the football program’s general manager.

The men’s basketball team has made the NCAA tournament just once in the past 17 seasons.

The women’s basketball team, which was already successful under coach Tara VanDerveer when Muir arrived in 2012, remained a top program under his watch. VanDerveer, who spent 38 seasons with Stanford before retiring last spring, had 1,216 career wins. The Stanford women are 14-13 under new coach Kate Paye.

Stanford’s most successful season under Muir came in 2018-19, capturing NCAA championships in women’s volleyball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s gymnastics, women’s water polo, women’s tennis and men’s golf.

Muir, 56, is likely to leave prior to the end of the school year, according to the Chronicle, and Stanford will likely appoint an interim AD while searching for a replacement.

Muir and his wife, Liz, have two daughters, Libby, a 2020 Stanford graduate who also competed as a member of the lacrosse team, and Millie, a redshirt sophomore at Duke and member of the women’s volleyball team.
