Democrats support measure that would oust sheriff

The San Mateo County Democratic Central Committee has voted to endorse a measure in a March special election to give the county Board of Supervisors the power to remove controversial sheriff Christina Corpus.

Only two years ago, the same committee endorsed Corpus in her bid for sheriff.

Committee chair Karen Maki said the committee’s vote on Thursday was 29-0 in favor of endorsing Measure A, with one abstention.

The county Board of Supervisors wants to remove her from office because of a pattern of “lies, secrecy, intimidation, retaliation, conflicts of interest and abuse of authority,” as a report by retired Judge LaDoris Cordell put it.

Maki said she describes the Democratic Party as a large tent, with space for lots of opinions.

“We don’t agree on everything, but we do agree on accountability and being responsible,” Maki said.

Maki said many in her party were excited and helped the Corpus campaign.

“People are quite unhappy this happened,” Maki said. “Having a young woman, a Latina, as a sheriff is a big deal. So it’s quite disappointing to have it not work out.”

Corpus’s attorneys filed a petition on Jan. 10 in San Mateo County Superior Court asking a judge to stop the impending March 4 election.

Corpus contends that the election shouldn’t happen in March, but instead in November 2026 because the law says charter measures should only appear on the ballot in general statewide elections.

A recall effort, led by retired state Sen. Jerry Hill of San Mateo and retired Caltrain/Samtrans CEO Jim Hartnett of Redwood City, is in its early stages.

Reps. Anna Eshoo-D Menlo Park, and Kevin Mullin, D-South San Francisco, are among the five people who have signed the argument supporting the measure.

The others who signed the argument are county Supervisor Noelia Corzo, Sgt. Sean Harper and Deputy Matthew Silano.

Meanwhile, the deputy sheriff’s union has created a political action committee to fundraise in for the special election on March 4.

The committee is called “Law Enforcement Against Corruption by San Mateo Deputy Sheriff’s Association” and is headed by Deputy Sheriff Eliot Storch, according to forms filed with the county.

Corpus and her supporters have not filed any fundraising forms with the county.

But Pacifica resident and volunteer diver Dan Stegink is the lone signatory on the argument against the charter amendment.

Stegink argues that the measure is “a political power grab by a few local supervisors, who seek to appoint an insider loyal to them.”

Stegink credits Corpus with the “near elimination” of catalytic converters thefts, a decrease in rape, burglaries and assaults.

  1. I agree with Dan Stegink about the power grab and then wanting an insider, a “good ol boy”. I also feel the Sheriff’s Department was corrupt long before she came along. I feel they resent being led by a woman of color. I feel she has been set up. I voted for her, and support her fight to remain sheriff and for HER to clean up the corruption in the department. They can not just remove her. She is for the people.

    • Carrie M so it’s ok to falsely arrest your own employees and give your boyfriend a job he’s not qualified for to the tune of $250k +. Is it also ok to lie to the press and public with every breath. Not to mention the judge’s report. You’re one of her last few supporters

    • Carrie, so you want Corpus to clean up the corruption in the department that she caused?

You claim she was set up.

OK, who forced her to order the arrest of Carlos Tapia? Did somebody put a gun to her head and tell her to order his arrest? Who forced her to fire Ryan Monaghan? And who forced her to repeatedly text homophobic slurs? Who forced her to call former sheriff Bolanos the N-word over and over again? And who forced her to hire her boyfriend, in violation of county anti-nepotism policies?

Yeah, sure, she was set up. Of course. And she deserves a pass because she’s a Latina. You’ve got to think we’re all stupid if you think she’s “for the people.”

    • More identity politics by an ill informed sexist and racist. Of course it’s because she female and Of Latin heritage. Of course it’s not because she did any wrong. Take your head out of the sand Carrie m.

  2. She doesn’t care about what the democrats say she was a republican until she decided to run. Little Victor got a picture with Trump. Another lie by the doctor and Sheriff you can trust.

  3. Well Karen – Karrie careie whatever you call yourself

This sheriff hired the captains and her command staff, and she corrupted the sheriff’s office during her tenure. There is no power grab – there is no benefit to anyone, especially the board of supervisors who had to step in to deal with the multiple HR violations, complaints and lawsuits.

If you speak to anyone that actually works at the sheriff office or within the county they can tell you how this sheriff gaslights the people with her interviews, and takes credit for the people’s work while she sits in her closed office or doesn’t come in. Noone in the county supports her anymore because she is corrupt. Look at the Measure A link and see the list of supporters and wonder why so many people have turned their back. The county needed this female leader to act like a sheriff and know how to communicate and also follow policies, procedures and labor laws. This sheriff is jot above the law. She hired her bestie and let him run rampant breaking laws, and she turned a blind eye to everything.

Don’t lose yourself in these manipulations and lies spewed by the Sheriff, Aenlle and her buddy Dan on abc7 – all twisted

  4. Why are there so many professional women lately who have broken the glass ceiling only to throw it away for romance? Corpus appears to be following in the footsteps of former District Attorney Pamela Price and former Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, whom were both recently recalled. Sheng Thao was also indicted by the feds over the alleged Pay-To-Play bribery activities of her boyfriend.

Seriously, ladies, there is no D on the planet that is worth losing your job, throwing away your career, and/or going to prison over.

  5. In 2022, she tricked the Democrats into believing she was a “progressive.” She was a registered Republican before she changed affiliations and started working with progressives like Noelia Corzo and the crew of Fixin’ San Mateo. The only reform she promised was to stop cooperating with ICE when they tried to arrest violent convicted felons who were wanted for deportation. Funny thing is that quietly she backtracked on that policy, and now the jailers call ICE whenever they’re going to release somebody ICE wants. She lied about ICE and she lied to the Progressives on the Democratic Central Committee.

  6. Corpus and Aenlle would be smart to both hire criminal defense lawyers who would begin negotiating with Wagstaffe a plea bargain on the charges they will face. Criminal charges are inevitable for those two, and they’re looking at prison time. If they make a deal now, they might be able to reduce the number of years they’re incarcerated.

  7. Come on Carrie. Wake up! Corpus is for one person and one person only…HERSELF! She could care less about you, her staff, her community or the voters of San Mateo County.
