Updated: Pedestrian killed in East Palo Alto

UPDATE — The man who died after being hit by a car in East Palo Also has been identified as Jose Asencio Matias, according to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s office. Asencio Matias was 64 and an East Palo Alto resident of Ralmar Avenue, where the crash on occurred on Feb. 26. The crash occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on the 2200 block of Ralmar Avenue near Bay Road. Police found Asencio Matias unconscious on the driveway of a residence with obvious injuries. He was immediately taken to Stanford Hospital, where he ultimately died from his injuries. A GoFundMe has been set up by Asencio Matias’ family to raise funds for a funeral, hospital bills and to potentially repatriate Asencio Matias to his native El Salvador, from which he immigrated in the 1980s. FEB. 26 — A car hit and killed a 64-year-old pedestrian in East Palo Alto this morning, and the driver didn’t stop until he smashed into a fence a block away. When police arrived at 10:08 a.m., they found the victim on the driveway of a home in the 2200 block of Ralmar Avenue, near Bay Road. Police said he was unconscious with apparent injuries. They also found three vehicles that appear to have been hit by the car. The man was rushed to a hospital, and then police found the car.  About a block mile away, police found the driver and his car, where it had hit two more vehicles and smashed into a fence. Police Chief Jeff Liu said in a statement that it didn’t appear as if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Meanwhile, the pedestrian received medical treatment at a hospital but died of his injuries. Neither the name of the driver or the victim have been released.
