Police arrested a suspect today (Nov. 22) in a drive-by shooting of Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse at the Stanford Shopping Center.
Zachary Michael Ginsberg, 32, of San Jose, was a former employee of the restaurant, and he had sent threatening text messages to a former supervisor “as a result of an interpersonal conflict,” police said.
Yesterday afternoon, Ginsberg fired a gun from his Chevrolet Camaro driving on El Camino Real, police said.
One bullet went through a front window, shattering the glass, and another bullet hit a parked car.
Twenty minutes later, police stormed the mall with rifles because of a report of a man with a holster on his hip. Nobody reported a gun, and the mall was cleared.
Officers arrested Ginsberg at 9:55 this morning in Santa Clara for attempted murder and shooting at an occupied building. They also towed his car for evidence and searched his home in San Jose, where they recovered an unregistered handgun that can be built at home, known as a “ghost gun,” that police believe was used in the crime.

If the police would put a police car in the Stanford Shopping Center parking lot — in a prominent location — I’ll bet shootings like this and robberies would stop. I realize that after years of rounds of defunding, the police will say they don’t have the staffing for that. Then why not assess Stanford for its costs on the city?
I work at this mall. There already are police and security cars there nearly 24/7. Please don’t act a fool on the internet and make a mockery of a real life mental health crisis and dangerous situation just to talk about defunding the police.
Just got back from the mall after a couple hours of shopping and there was no visible police presence. Cops might have been there undercover. But there were no uniforms visible, no marked police cars. I realize our city council is anti police and that we just elected a “defund the police” justice warrior. But this ambivalence is going to get somebody killed.
I’ve wondered the same thing about the lack of police. A little deterrence goes a long way.
