Monday (July 13) is the first day candidates can file for local offices in the Nov. 3 election.
Those interested in running for city council must file with the city clerk, while school board, special district and countywide candidates must file with the respective county’s elections officials between July 13 and Aug. 7. If an incumbent does not file for re-election, the filing deadline is extended to Aug. 12.
The following is a list of local offices that are up for grabs on the Mid-Peninsula.
San Mateo County Board
of Supervisors
A two-year seat in District 5
David Canepa is resigning to be the county’s Assessor-County Clerk-Recorder and Chief Election’s Officer.
San Mateo County Board of Education
Three seats, Trustee Areas 1, 2 and 3
Incumbents: Susan Alvaro, Edith Arias and Beverley Gerard
Trustee Area 1 includes includes Belmont-Redwood Shores, Cabrillo, La Honda-Pescadero, San Mateo-Foster city, San Mateo Union and Sequoia Union
Alvaro is from Area 1.
Trustee Area 2 includes Bayshore, Brisbane, Jefferson Elementary and Jefferson Union. Gerard is from Area 2.
Trustee Area 3 includes San Bruno Park, San Mateo Union and South San Francisco. Arias is from 3.
San Mateo County Harbor Board
Two seats, Districts 2 and 3
Incumbents: George Domurat (District 2) and Kathryn Slater-Carter (District 3)
Atherton City Council
Three seats
Incumbents: Stacy Holland, Rick DeGolia and Bill Widmer
Belmont City Council
Three seats, Mayor, Districts 1 and 3
Incumbents: Mayor Julia Mates, Robin Pang-Maganaris (District 1) and Gina Latimerlo (District 3)
East Palo Alto City Council
Two seats
Incumbents: Ruben Abrica and Martha Barragan
Los Altos City Council
Two seats, Districts 2 and 4
Councilman Pete Dailey isn’t running. District 2, which is on the south end of the city, includes the area around Grant Park and neighborhoods north of Fremont Avenue. District 4 includes downtown and runs from North El Monte Avenue to around Los Altos High School.
Menlo Park City Council
Three seats, Districts 1, 2 and 4
District 1 includes the Belle Haven and Bayfront neighborhoods. Councilwoman Cecilia Taylor lives in District 1 and will not seek reelection.
Councilman Drew Combs is seeking reelection for District 2, which includes the Willows and Suburban Park neighborhoods.
District 4 includes downtown Menlo Park and Allied Arts. Mayor Betsy Nash lives in District 4 and is not seeking reelection
Mountain View City Council
Three seats
Incumbents Alison Hicks, Ellen Kamei and Lucas Ramirez are all termed out.
Palo Alto City Council
Three seats
Incumbents: Ed Lauing, Vicki Veenker and Julie Lythcott-Haims. Lauing is seeking reelection. Lythcott-Haims is not running for reelection.
Redwood City
Three seats, Districts 2, 5, 6
Incumbents: Chris Sturken (District 2), Kaia Eakin (District 5) and Diane Howard (District 6).
District 2 includes the Bair Island, Redwood Village and Marina areas. Sturken represents District 2.
District 5 includes the Redwood Oaks neighborhood and parts of Palm Park neighborhood. Eakin represents District 5.
District 6 includes the Woodside Plaza, Redwood Oaks, Palm Park, and Canyon neighborhoods. Howard represents District 6.
San Carlos City Council
Three seats
Incumbents: Pranita Venkatesh, Adam Rak and Sara McDowell
Portola Valley Town Council
Three seats
Incumbents: Craig Taylor, Mary Hufty and Judith Hasko
Woodside Town Council
Two seats, Districts 2 and 3
Incumbents: Brian Dombkowski and Dick Brown
District 2 includes parts of Woodside along Kings Mountain Road and parts of Emerald Hills east of Interstate 280. Dombkowski lives in District 2.
District 3 includes communities south of Woodside Road and north of the intersection of Woodside, Portola and La Honda roads. Brown lives in District 3.
Belmont-Redwood Shores School District
Three seats, Trustee Areas 1, 3 and 5
Incumbents: April Northrup, David Koss and Jackee Bruno
The board is switching to being elected by district after a threat of a lawsuit. Trustee Area 1 includes the Ballot Book in Belmont and Redwood Shores neighborhoods. Trustee Area 3 includes neighborhoods west of El Camino Real and Bayshore Freeway. Trustee Area 5 includes neighborhoods east of El Camino Real and Junipero Serra Freeway.
Las Lomitas Elementary
School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Gautam Nadella, Heather Hopkins and Paige Winikoff
Los Altos School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Brandon Stroy, Bryan Johnson and Vaishali “Shali” Sirkay
Mountain View Whisman
School Board
Two seats
Incumbents: Devon Conley and Bill Lambert
Menlo Park City School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Jed Scolnick, Sherwin Chen and Scott Saywell
Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Thida Cornes, Esmeralda Ortiz and Catherine Vonnegut
Palo Alto Unified School Board
Two seats
Incumbents Shounak Dharap and Shana Segal are not seeking reelection.
Ravenswood City School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Mele Latu, Tamara Sobomehin and Laura Nunez
Redwood City School Board
Two seats
Incumbents: David Weekly and Cecilia Marquez
Sequoia Union High
School Board
Two seats, Areas A and D
Incumbent Amy Koo lives in Area A, which includes parts of Belmont, San Carlos and Redwood City.
Incumbent Sathvik Nori lives in Area D, which includes Menlo Park and Atherton.
Woodside Elementary School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Jenny Hayden, Amanda Peiffer and Brett Westervelt
San Carlos School Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Sarah Cassanego, Boris Lipkin and Q Hamirani
Foothill-DeAnza Community
College Board
Two seats, Districts 2 and 4
District 2 includes central Sunnyvale. Incumbent Alexander Gvatua lives in District 2. District 4 includes Cupertino and Saratoga. Incumbent Pearl Cheng lives in District 4.
San Mateo County Community College Board
Two seats, Districts 2 and 4
Incumbent Mike Guingona lives in District 2, including northern San Mateo County.
Incumbent Richard Holober lives in District 3, including Belmont, San Mateo and Foster City.
Menlo Park Fire Protection
Board
Three seats
Incumbents: Chuck Bernstein, Gary Bloom and Robert Jones
Santa Clara Valley Water Board
Four seats, Districts 1, 4, 6 and 7
District 7 spans northern Santa Clara County, including Palo Alto, Mountain View and Los Altos. Palo Alto resident Rebecca Eisenberg is the current incumbent.
Sequoia Healthcare Board
Three seats, Zones A, C and E
Incumbents: Rosanne Foust, William Fong
Zone A includes eastern parts of San Carlos and Belmont, Redwood Shores and a pocket of Foster City. Fong represents Zone A.
Zone C includes San Carlos and the Emerald Hills neighborhood of Redwood City. Foust represents Zone C.
Zone E includes parts of Belmont, Emerald Hills, San Carlos, Woodside and all of Portola Valley.
West Bay Sanitary Board
Two seats
Incumbents: Roy Thiele-Sardina and Edward Mortiz
Woodside Fire Protection Board
One seat
Incumbent: Matt Miller
