Santa Clara County prosecutors have signed a plea deal with a Berkeley husband and wife who spray-painted the front of stores in the Stanford Shopping Center during an anti-Israel protest and then ran over an officer’s foot in their getaway car.

Fatima Yahyaa, 27, admitted to felony vandalism and agreed to do 240 hours of volunteer work.

Yahyaa used red spray paint to scrawl illegible text on the front windows of Sephora and Apple during the protest on Oct. 7, 2024. The damage was estimated to be over $1,000 police said.

True Brading, 26, admitted to assault on a police officer and will spend 30 days in jail and 120 days on house arrest.

Brading was driving as Yahyaa ran from police and ran over Officer Dan Pojanamat’s foot during their escape.

Yahyaa and Brading were tracked down and arrested in Berkeley later that week.

The couple signed the plea deal with Deputy District Attorney William Bobseine on Oct. 27 and will be formally sentenced at the Palo Alto Courthouse on Dec. 17.

A Portland, Ore., man punched a woman in her 60s who was taking a walk, Palo Alto Police said.

The woman, a Redwood City resident, told police she was on a walk along the 700 block of El Camino Real just before noon last Monday when Dennis Jackson, 39, approached her and punched her three times without being provoked, Lt. David Lee said. The two didn’t know each other prior to the incident, Lee said.

The woman was injured but didn’t need to be taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred just outside the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, but Lee said Jackson wasn’t a patient.

Jackson was arrested and booked at the Santa Clara County Main Jail for aggravated battery.

He was arraigned Thursday and is being charged with a felony. He’s being held on $25,000 bail and is set to appear in court Dec. 8.

  1. easy release “deals” like this only encourage more immoral anti-American violence, attacks on citizens, and harm to our police. Evil people who deliberately, intentionally violate other folks’ rights and our laws need to be given significant sentences — not let off or let off with just 30 days.

  2. When these lawless people keep getting away with violent acts receiving only a slap on the wrist don’t ask why it keeps happening. When will people wake up ?

  3. I really think at a minimum they should have been required to take an anti-Semitism education workshop to understand the problematic history of their behavior

  4. Unbelievable that these antisemitic criminals – who vandalized a mall, assaulted a police officer, and fled the scene at an anti-Israel protest on the first anniversary of October 7 – got a slap on the wrist.

Where’s the mandatory antisemitism education that they should be taking? If you don’t learn what you did wrong, you’re bound to repeat it. Unacceptable!

  5. It is terrible to hear about this in our beautiful community. It is especially disappointing for us Muslims that believes in peace and co-existence. Their behavior does not elevate our faith. The district attorney should have imposed stronger penalties.

  6. As usual, felons who can claim a supposed high moral ground get away with a slap on the wrist for racist vandalism, running away from police, and aggravated assault (on a police officer no less!). This will only encourage more lawlessness, not less!
