San Mateo County Supervisors fire Sheriff Corpus

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors fired Sheriff Christina Corpus today (Oct. 14) for various allegations including corruption. She has to turn in her badge and gun at the end of her shift today.

“Today is the end of a tragic, destructive and grossly expensive chapter in San Mateo County,” said Supervisor Jackie Speier. “I had high hopes for Sheriff Corpus, I voted for her. … She had great ideas to modernize the office and it’s so tragic to see her time as sheriff come down to this.”

Corpus was not in the room when the board voted 5-0 to remove her. She left during a break in this afternoon’s proceedings to watch the rest of the meeting from her office across the street at 330 Bradford St.

“This isn’t just retaliation against me. It’s betrayal of the voters who demand honesty, transparency and fairness and law enforcement,” Corpus said during the public comment part of the supervisor’s meeting. “I may lose my title, but I will never, ever lose my purpose.
So serve, to protect and to stand for what’s right.”

By state law, Undersheriff Dan Perea will take on the duties of sheriff until an interim is appointed by the board, according to county spokeswoman Effie Milionis Verducci.

Supervisors have 30 days to fill Corpus’ vacancy but are not allowed to make a decision during the first 14 days due to Judge Nira Shapirshteyn ruling to allow Corpus’s legal team to appeal the decision and reinstate her.

Supervisors David Canepa and Speier are in favor of holding a special election in June for a sheriff to fill out the rest of Corpus’ term, which ends in 2028.

The voters, in a special election in March, changed the county charter to give the supervisors authority to remove Corpus with a four-fifth vote.

The process of giving her an opportunity to make her case has taken seven months, with a 10-day appeal hearing last month.

Hearing Officer James Emerson, a retired judge, recommended the supervisors fire Corpus for nepotism and illegally arresting Carlos Tapia, president of the deputies union. He also found that Corpus retaliated against Capt. Brian Philip for transferring him to the jail after he refused to start an internal affairs investigation into Sgt. Javier Acosta, brother of sergeant’s union president, Hector Acosta.

Meanwhile, the county has been paying Corpus’ legal fees. However, the county has refused to say how much it has spent in legal fees for her or the county. The county hired outside counsel to handle her case.

  1. The San Mateo Sheriff’s office is completely corrupt and nothing’s going to change by removing the corrupt sheriff. Now can we move on?

  2. There is so much wasted from this situation. Beginning with losing support from all avenues in her career over wrongdoing. Wrongdoing that Corpus turned her head to and ignored, pointing fingers at other people and defaming good people. Corpus violated policies, state, federal, county, PERB, the list goes on.

The lengths she took to continue battling in court only to appear and grandstand the public with stories of her friends in half moon bay, in fair oaks, stories about the former sheriff, stories about her race and color. What Corpus failed to do is her JOB as Sheriff. There were no supporters left in the Sheriff office. She turned her eyes on the unions, on victims of Aenlle, people that defended clear legal violations.

It has taken so much time and money to get to this day of the first CA Sheriff to be FIRED for CAUSE! The difference with past Sheriff’s is they did not have 30-40 + people wronged by the Sheriff. She sat back hoping to throw around her authority thinking she was/is above the law.

Today, I hope we can all sit back and reflect on the choices we make when we VOTE! Elected officials hold a power that the general public does not have- the power to be fired for doing something wrong. I question why is that? Why does it take this many people, investigations, court hearings to get someone out of office. Why would anyone be so immoral to sit back and allow this to go on and take absolutely NO ACCOUNTABILITY.

Time to move forward. Time to heal. Time to find the right people to steer this county in the right direction. This has been unbearable to go through. Sleepless nights, lots of stress. New violations to deal with and read about every week. It is so so wrong.

I don’t think this is the end for Christina- she will pull some more attempts and likely fail. Hopefully, Christina will also be held accountable from all of the authorities that can discipline her for wrongdoing, blatant irreparable harm she has allowed, witnessed and actively committed herself. The time for justice has come, and we can all hope that one day it will be served completely.

    • Agreed. I worked there for many years with NO thought by any of us as to retribution, reward or so on. It was all about service, for a good cause and a decent job for a decent paycheck. We all worked there because we enjoyed the service to the citizens, doing the right things, trying to be honest etc. Sure, we were not right 100%, but we tried. It actually was fun for much of the time, with good folks. Thanks to her, Vicky (aka mini me), Sleazebag (aka Der Grosser Dumbkopf) Perea and the rest, it’s a mess. We need a new Sheriff who can demonstrate leadership, not fancy boots and ear rings from a creep. Perea, I told you before, but did you listen ? Nope. of course not. SamTrans has bus driver positions open, go for it man ! It’s about all you are gonna get. You think ANY LE agency in the USA is gonna touch you or her… but no, you and her are gonna take retirement and collect 90% pay for the next 30 years. On us. Sleazebags, all of you. You did exactly what for the County during your tenure, other than cash those payroll checks ? Name ONE thing you did ? And being an arrogant jerk to boot ? The guys hated (and still do) you and her, remember that. Remember the going away party at SF Sheriff where they celebrated a jerk leaving, vs a good bye party ? Uh Huh, still applies. Ready for Party #2 ?

    • You mean Fox or Parea which one turns on Corpus first- Aenlle has no badge and no authority to uphold in court.. other than unauthorized access to confidential files and personnel information… in my opinion

The people to turn on Corpus are none other than the Under Sheriff and Assistant Sheriff… or they face charges

      She was the “sheriff”

  3. Ding dong the witch is dead! I Finally feel really good about my handle here! It was a long tough road, but it got done! Thank you PA Daily staff for leading the way in getting the word out to the public about what a horrible, corrupt Sheriff Corpus was, and thank you helping rid us all of her narcissistic, egomaniacal, rat fink little boy friend, Victor Aenlle. The Sheriff’s Office – and the whole County – will be SO much better off without their incompetency and scheming BS. It’s a great day for San Mateo County!!!!!

  4. Even though Corpus has been fired she is still involved in collusion and corruption in regards to removing the Captain’s position in The City of Millbrae. Corpus is working in concert with Assistant Sheriff Sergio Enriquez, Millbrae City Manger Thomas Williams (no stranger to misuse of public funds, google Milpitas City Manager) and Dan Noyse of all people to disrupt the Millbrae Police Beurea and permanently remove the Captains position all without public input or knowledge. Citizens of Millbrae and the real press should ask questions and demand answers now!

  5. What a wonderful day!
    — What a wonderful day!
Are we thankful for the words of Retired Judge Emerson?
    — We are thankful.
    Do we bend our heads?
    — We bend!
    Say his words!
    — Corpus is Guilty!
    Say the BOS words!
    — Corpus is Fired!
    What a wonderful day!

  6. Now that Sheriff Corpus has been officially removed from office, Undersheriff Dan Perea is set to assume her role in accordance with California state law. On the surface, this may appear to be a simple transition of power. In reality, it raises serious concerns.

Throughout the investigations that led to Sheriff Corpus’s dismissal, there were troubling indications that Undersheriff Perea may have been aware of, complicit in, or possibly even directly involved in the misconduct at the center of the controversy. If this is the case, then we have not resolved the problem—we’ve merely reshuffled the leadership while leaving its core issues intact.

Let’s be honest: Undersheriff Perea stood by Sheriff Corpus before and during her removal. His loyalty to her was unwavering. With that in mind, it’s reasonable to question whether he is the right person to lead the department through a necessary period of reform, transparency, and rebuilding of public trust. The optics and implications of placing someone so closely tied to the outgoing sheriff into the top position are troubling.

This transition leaves the door open to a continuation of the same problems—possibly worse—under a different name. The public deserves to know whether the Board of Supervisors has a plan to address this. What steps will be taken to ensure that Mr. Perea is not simply continuing a leadership style or culture that has already failed the department and the community?

We also cannot ignore the potential risks: retaliation against whistleblowers, the destruction of internal records, and the erosion of accountability. Even more concerning is the potential impact on the safety and morale of the deputies and staff who serve with integrity. If corruption remains embedded within the upper ranks, it can place both personnel and the public in unnecessary danger.

This is not alarmism—this is the result of a pattern we’ve already witnessed.

The community is watching. We are asking for honest leadership, meaningful oversight, and a clean break from the failures of the past. San Mateo County deserves a Sheriff’s Department that serves with transparency, accountability, and integrity at every level of its leadership.

I urge the Board of Supervisors and all responsible parties to take this moment seriously and act decisively. The credibility of the department—and the trust of the community—depend on it.

  7. This is far from over. Now that she has been fired she is potentially facing state criminal charges but more seriously federal criminal charges which will most likely involve public corruption, false arrest under the color of authority, violations of the 4th and 14th Amendments under color of authority as related to the illegal arrest of Deputy Tapia and the all encompassing federal wire charges.

  8. The undersheriff cannot be allowed to have the lead position, or nothing has changed. All the work to get CC out would have been for nothing. He took out 20 IA tickets after the “trial” ended and has been dealing them out like a deck of cards since then. As recently as last week. This has to stop for the protection of the staff in the SO. They deserve to work in an environment free from chaos, fear and retaliation. Come on BOS do the right thing, protect the staff!!! Remove the perjurer, henchman to CC and protect the staff!

  9. She got what she wanted! 15 minutes of shame, did you noticed how coquette her whole team looked the entire time she was getting fired? Haha, I bet you she has a collection of newspapers with her picture in it. I think she got enough exposure where she can start her career on TikTok, heck! Maybe she can start on that “Only Members” site…

  10. This whole process has taken way too long. A deputy would have been gone within a month. I’m disappointed in the BOS for letting this whole process drag out as it. Huge waste of tax payer money and un imaginable frustration to all the good members of the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.
I hope the BOS is NOT going to allow her to “retire” thus giving her a retirement pay package. Corpus WASTED hundreds of thousands tax payer funds to fight for her job. A result everyone knew how it would come out. She does not DESERVE one cent of retirement pay. As a good “latina” i’m sure Taco Bell would he happy to hire her. Good riddens !!

    • Unfortunately, she did retire with full benefits! OUTRAGEOUS!!! Once she is convicted of a felony for Civil Rights Violation along with other charges….she will be a convicted felon and lose her pension!

      • Unfortunately, that’s not how the pension felony forfeiture works. She would only lose her pension from the point of the first proven felonious conduct forward.

  11. Did you hear about the “Painting Party” last night at 0100 ? Uh huh.
Like 20 folks got together and went to Home Depot and bought scrapers and acetone. As of 0100, her name no longer appears on her office door, any county door, any sign, any parking spot, here or HMB or…, no sign of recognition. Hats off to the Painters. Good job folks, well done.

  12. Maybe they need to also tell Peninsula Uniform that they are not gonna be paid for Vic’s Stetson (ridiculous) black cowboy hats any more, too. Much less her jackets etc. So, I have a question for you all ? What’s a washed up, failed, serial loser aka Sheriff, fired by her County, hated by her employees, etc gonna do now for a job ? Get her Real Estate license and sell “no water” farm pastures with Vick in San Gorgonio ? You think ANY LE agency with half a brain is gonna ever want to touch her or mini-me again ? I think not. She is toast. But as a part of her being a part of the total loser patrol, she did apply for 90% retirement 8 hrs before being fired. So you and me are gonna end up paying this bum > $500K/year.. for ever. You like that ? Huh.

  13. Ok, Corpus is FINALLY gone. Now it’s time to speak of the future of the office. BOS, are you LISTENING?? Don’t waste these 30 days thinking about your choices. I believe I can speak for the majority of the office, Appoint Ryan Monaghan as the interim Sheriff before Perea has a chance to do any MORE damage. Allow him to start re-building the office, show he IS the right person for the job. In 3 years he runs for the full time position and the office is on the right track to recovery. I’m sure my fellow deputies will correct me of i’m wrong but…

    • Ryan Monaghan is a terrific person. This reply is not intended to defame him. Although, a guy who, as Assistant Sheriff, needed to inquire of a captain if the SO could and should withhold evidence from the District Attorney, instead of immediately responding to the Undersheriff who asked him if they could (yes, the same Undersheriff that the BOS is negligently permitting to run the SO now), is just not quite ready to be appointed as you suggest.

Sorry Ryan. It is true. However, Ryan is a great candidate to continue to be mentored and developed to be a key individual in an organization that has 850-employees and a $330M+ budget. Let me be clear though. Ryan didn’t agree with the Undersheriff. Ryan didn’t withhold anything from the DA. Ryan merely didn’t immediately tell the Undersheriff something like, “No sir, that’s not how we do things here in San Mateo County. That type of behavior impedes and obstructs justice. That kind of behavior by law enforcement causes them to get arrested themselves. No sir, we don’t do that here.” It’s likely that Ryan confirmed what he thought to be true with the IA Captain, then Ryan educated the Undersheriff.

      Let’s have a special election.

      • Former resident- think you are missing the correct information, Sit. Ryan Monaghan did infact do all of the right things and raise the flags to the right people and push back… another reason why Corpus and Aenlle “lost trust”. There were several times since Parea that Monaghan challenged the regime and pushed back which left him outside their meetings, and left to play poker face to the team. He defended everyone and ultimately paid the price for it – still is. Publicly Corpus tried to twost stories to get a reaction and get him to play her games aka Aenlle’s games.

Not sure whyanoyone would not want someone that knows how to take the heat and stand up for multiple people of many ranks.

Former Resident, rethink your bias..: people who are reactive and have knee jerk reactions onky prove to be be thinking of themselves and demonstrate poor leadership skills. People like that are unqualified. There was jo holding back only respectable behind the scenes leadership behaviors- that defended the entire sheriff office.

      • Pretending you know 1/2 pf what was going on after Chris Hsiung left… ie was forced out. And then to start working with an Undersheriff that was secretly hired behind everyone’s back including Ryan Monaghan. Then all of these secret meetings with Parea, Aenlle, corpus and Fox.

And how about being brought into a room hearing about an issue for the first time and needing to get information on your own in order to have an educated logical legal reply. Until you put together all of the puzzle pieces of the corruption unfolding rapidly in weeks after Parea started then don’t sit back and judge situations. There was and still is A LOT of truths to unravel and fix.

The said person you describe as pushing back immediately with a definitive response and little details is who you want to be Sheriff? So someone that makes quick emotional decisions without asking for more information. What you imply is that someone shouke have just known Parea was asking and have known all of the missing details without asking and then just say that’s not how things are done.

  14. For Sheriff Perea. You’re probably sitting in your office staring at the ceiling asking yourself, “What do I do now?” I have two simple and common sense suggestions. One, if you haven’t already, immediately remove Aenlle from the CCW Unit. Two, on the 14th day, when the BOS will announce how they will be filling the Sheriff’s position, turn in your Letter of Resignation! In doing so, you will reserve a spot in the annals of San Mateo County as the shortest serving Sheriff. It will be quite the honor to have an asterisk by your name in the official list of Sheriff’s of San Mateo County.

  15. Agree totally. Perea = another bum. Look at his ridiculous tenure at SF Sheriff (aka the Loser Patrol up there, ask anyone, they are Clowns, read up on the party celebrating his departure as the Head Sleazebag). He needs to go down the same path as Victina. Leave before your indictment. Ok then, maybe retire and milk the County for 30+ years, like her, right ? Love her 90% retirement filing the morning she was fired, total creep. Also, you gotta believe these fools are now seriously seeing the huge $$$ penalties they are facing as crooks. Ruh Roh says Scooby. Get out your checkbook Dude. I know many $ 1-2K /hr lawyers who are drooling over your cases, but not on your side. But you can’t afford it, as a loser, can you ? No County protection. Sell that house now. Once you are fired, like Victina, aint no one gonna pay your legal bills Senor, aka the County. Can I buy the title to your house now or later ? See what loyalty to a sleaze merchant gets you ? Nothing. You sold your morals to a jerk, maybe it is really just a ‘Creep to a Creep’, who knows ? Done with it.

I am so over these jerks, I can’t tell you. Let’s get new folks who are ethical, honest and dedicated in asap and purge the bums and jerks.

  16. Why is Victor Aenlle still reviewing – processing CCW applications? This is very concerning indeed. Mr Anelle in my opinion should be removed immediately.
