A 64-year-old driver from Menlo Park suffered a medical problem, ran a red light on El Camino Real in Redwood City and hit a 17-year-old, who suffered significant injuries and remains in critical condition, police said.
The accident happened at 12:10 p.m. Monday in the 2700 block of El Camino Real, near Taco Bell.
Both the teen and the driver were taken to the hospital.
Police talked to several witnesses at the scene and video evidence was collected.
“Our initial assessment is that the driver ran a red light on El Camino Real and struck the pedestrian who was lawfully in the crosswalk,” Redwood City police said in a statement.
Police saw no obvious signs of impairment due to drugs or alcohol.
Medical personnel on scene opined it appeared the driver suffered a debilitating medical event immediately preceding the collision. Blood samples were collected in this case and will be processed for evaluation.
