Hillsborough police have released a composite sketch of a “person of interest” in the Feb. 22 shooting of a police officer outside the town’s police station.

He’s Hispanic, age 25 to 27, standing 5 feet, 5 inches to 5 feet, 7 inches, with a slim build and pale complexion, police said.

He was last seen wearing a black trucker hat, black windbreaker-type jacket, possibly over a white shirt, dark sagging jeans with rhinestones on the back pockets and flat-soled Nike shoes, police said.

The shooting occurred about 3:49 p.m. in what police described as a secured area near an auxiliary building.

“When approached, the individual fired at the officer, who returned fire,” police said in the press release. It wasn’t known whether the suspect was hit. He fled the scene on foot.

The gunshot struck the officer in an area protected by body armor, Capt. Meme Colla said. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery, she said.

The person of interest was seen running south on El Camino Real near Barroilhet Avenue in Burlingame about 5:30 p.m., or almost two hours after the shooting.

“The individual appeared anxious and was looking back frequently, suggesting an attempt to avoid detection,” police said.

Colla said it was possible the man could have been hiding from officers involved in an intensive search of the area around the police station.

Police headquarters is located with Town Hall at 1600 Floribunda Ave.

Hillsborough police are asking that residents and businesses in the area review any security camera footage from the afternoon and evening of Feb. 22 for anyone running through the area or an unknown vehicle parked nearby.
