The Menlo Park Planning Commission tonight (Jan. 13) approved the controversial teacher housing project at the former Flood School site.

This was the project’s final hurdle after a series of neighbors’ concerns and being subject to a ballot measure two years ago.

The commission approved the 88 apartments for 320 Sheridan Drive with a 5-1 vote. Commissioner Katie Ferrick was the single no vote. Commissioner Linh Dan Do was absent; the commissioners did not take the vote lightly.

Issues raised by commissioners and residents tonight concerned adding an additional exit to the project and more bike parking.

Ferrick pointed out that the 800+ pages produced by staff and the developer, Alliant Development, did not include any traffic studies along Bay Road and Ringwood Avenue, which residents of the new apartment complex will likely travel.

Neighbors have said they still want a second entrance so that some cars leave through the Flood Triangle neighborhood via Van Buren Road.

Menlo Park Fire Protection District officials have reviewed developer Alliant Development’s plans and have signed off since there will be a gate for emergency vehicles to get in and out.
