UPDATE: Two people killed on Caltrain tracks in 2 days

Update, Nov. 20, 2024 — A Caltrain hit and killed someone at around 5:15 a.m. on Nov. 20 in Menlo Park near Glenwood Avenue, said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, who was a passenger on the train.

Caltrain described the incident as a “service disruption” on social media causing delays over an hour long. The identity of the person wasn’t available last night.

He or she is the second person hit by a Caltrain this week.

Eduardo Garcia, 27, of San Francisco, was killed around 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday at an undisclosed location in San Mateo County, the coroner said.

Caltrain started a new policy in May of no longer telling the public about people getting hit.

Caltrain has recorded at least 18 deaths on the tracks this year, the most since 2015.

The causes of deaths, and whether they were accidents or suicides, hasn’t been determined, according to a report provided by Caltrain on Oct. 17. Since 2018, 30% of deaths have been accidents, the report said.

Nov. 20, 2024 — A man was killed by a Caltrain Tuesday (Nov. 19) just after midnight at an undisclosed location, the San Mateo County Coroner’s Office said.

Eduardo Garcia, 27, of San Francisco, was hit around 12:30 a.m., according to a Caltrain alert.

Caltrain said a medical emergency was causing delays but didn’t provide further details about the strike, including the location.

The coroner confirmed Garcia’s identity yesterday afternoon.

Caltrain spokesman Dan Lieberman was out of the office yesterday, and his backup Randol White didn’t return a request for information.

Caltrain started a new policy in May of no longer telling the public about train strikes in an effort to stop copycat suicides.

However, the new policy isn’t reducing deaths. Caltrain has now recorded the most deaths on the tracks since 2015, when 20 deaths were reported.

Caltrain had 16 deaths through Oct. 1, according to a report provided by Caltrain on Oct. 17.

Caltrain hasn’t determined whether deaths from this year were suicides or accidents, the report said.

Since 2018, Caltrain has reported 95 deaths, including 47 suicides and 20 accidents. Causes for 28 deaths are still pending, the report said.

  1. Earlier this week I saw someone at Sequoia Station run across the tracks ahead of the train. The new electric trains seem to accelerate faster than the diesel ones, so being on the tracks is really dangerous. However, $$$ Millions have been spent on automated crossing guards … “you can’t fix stupid” .
