Liccardo, Simitian, take early leads

Former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian will likely face off in November for retiring Congresswoman Anna Eshoo’s seat.

Simitian had been amassing a campaign over the years, but chose not to challenge Eshoo, who he considers a friend. Liccardo had previously floated the idea of running against Rep. Zoe Lofgren, D-San Jose.

In other races, East Palo Alto Councilwoman Lisa Gauthier may avoid a run-off election against her fellow council member, Antonio Lopez. Early results had Gauthier receiving 49.7% of the vote. She needs 50% to avoid a run-off.

Former Congresswoman Jackie Speier will be returning to her former digs in Redwood City as a county supervisor, having easily defeated her sole opponent, Ann Schnieder, a councilwoman in Millbrae.

The November race to replace Simitian on the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors will be between Mountain View Councilwoman Margaret Abe-Koga and Board of Equalization member Sally Lieber. Lieber used to be on the Mountain View council until resigning when she was elected to the state taxation board.

  1. Julie Lithcott-Haynes won’t be our Congresswoman! The Squad was counting on her to join! I can’t believe the Woke candidates like her didn’t win!
