Four people — two children and two adults — were found dead in a house on the 4100 block of Alameda de las Pulgas in San Mateo, police said.

The adults died of gunshots. Police haven’s said how the children died or what was the motive behind the incident.

Broadcast media said the two children were 4-year-old twin boys.

At 9:13 a.m. on Monday, police were dispatched to the home for a welfare check, police said in a statement. Police didn’t say in their statement who called in the request for a welfare check.

Officers were “met with no response” and so they searched the area around the home, but didn’t find any signs of forced entry into the house.

They got inside through an unlocked window and found two children dead inside a bedroom. Then they found an adult man and woman in a bathroom who had died of gunshot wounds, police said.

The daily coroner’s report this morning had four lines crossed off. Presumably they were the names of the four people who died in the home.

“Based on the information we have at this time, this appears to be an isolated incident with no danger to the public as we are confident the person responsible was located within the home,” police said. “This investigation continues as detectives work to gather evidence, speak to witnesses and family members, and determine a possible motive.”
