Town keeps an eye on visitors — Residents pay to install cameras

In the wealthy enclave of Atherton, there are 47 automated license plate readers to prevent crime. But the Police Department didn’t pay for all of those cameras. Of the 47 license plate cameras, 26 were purchased by residents to help the police.

The cameras photograph the license plates of cars, allowing law enforcement to know who is coming and going.
